The missus said she'd like to start shooting again, the kids have enjoyed their trips to the range with the BB gun, and now Daddy wants something to play with...

So I was at the gun store today, and this Springfield 1911 mil-spec could be heard in the background quietly calling my name. And so I asked to scope it out, and after racking the slide and feeling it snick back into place, and wrapping my hand around the grips, and sighting down the top at the target on the wall, Oh la la... I might even have peed a little, it was so exciting...

So when I finish my next project next week, that baby is coming home.

WIht that said:

1) 5" barrel? And people carry this? And walk straight? I'd think you'd have a permanent limp at least...

2) What's the diff between the mil-spec and any other of the mid-range 1911's from springfiled? They had one in stainless, and one in blue/black, Personally , I think guns should be black, but that stainless felt nice...

3) Do they make it chambered in 9? I'd like to be able to afford to shoot it, a lot... Maybe back to the .22 conv kit...

4) There was a heck of alot of oil on the slide, at least in the groove where the slide and frame meet... Does it really need that mucH? I oil my 457 S&W, but I'd say maybe 3-4 drops over everything that needs it, vs the half-pint spilling out the end... Or maybe it's something from being new and preserving it or something?

Anyway, the 1911 bug has bit, and while I do want to find something fun in 9mm, like the 24/7, I think this Springfield has got to find a place at my house...

Whatcha think a used (450 rounds), 457 S&W is worth?

Thanks for your time...

Curious - do you find that your 457 has a POI somewhat lower than POA?

A clean, used 457 ought to be worth about $350.00+/-, somewhat less in trade...

Unfortunately both Springfield and Kimber crap up their 9mm 1911 guns with adjustable sights, call them "target models" and ask $700+ for them! Kind of defeats the purpose of buying the gun so you can shoot cheap ammo! I keep hope that RIA will bring in their .38Super (under $400!) as a 9mm at the same price point.

My 9mm 1911 itch is for the time being scratched by the Star BM "spanish police surplus" pistols which still can be found for <$200 although extra mags and spare parts aren't so easy to find.

The GI and Mil-spec guns lack the "creature comforts" like beavertail grip safety and better sights.

As to .22 conversion kits, unless you are a bullseye shooter and want the same trigger for all stages of a 2700 match, to me it just makes more since to buy a Ruger, Buckmark, Beretta Neos etc. .22 pistol for basically the same money or a bit less and have an extra gun. Extra mags for the conversion kits are rip off plain and simple, not to say extra mags are a bargain for the above 22 pistols, but they are by comparison.

Most guns come bathed in oil not knowing where or how long they'll sit waiting to be sold. Just clean and lubricate normally before shooting, But read the manual first to be sure the lube its bathed in is not some kind of assembly compound to "wear in" the gun (Glocks come to mind here with the goop they ship with on the frame rails).

I'd take the "other mid-range 1911s" to be the Loaded models. They come in, IIRC, stainless, black stainless or parkerized finish; I have the parked model and it's just beautiful! Shoots good, too. Mine has the ambidextrous thumb safety, beavertail grip safety, skeletonized hammer & (adjustable) trigger and 3-dot fixed night sights. Some of the Loaded models do come with adjustable sights, though, and they make it in 9mm as well.
