A Colt 1991 does not come prepared to carry for the individual. When people think of Colt they often conjure up images of an iconic fight winner that has conquered the world but in spite of Hollywood's insistence most battles were not won by bayonet charges or singular acts of valor against impossible odds. When you make a commitment to carry, for whatever reason you have, it is you against the world without back-up.

For a stock 1991 that means different sights, a new (properly staked) plunger tube (my last was loose-no surprise), reliable magazines (my last one included 2 duds for the trash can), frontstrap checkering to improve grip, a new main spring housing not made of plastic and a beavertail (if needed). Add up the cost and you could easily double the cost of an M&P before it's ready for your intended purpose. All of this hinges on having a good pistolsmith available to perform the work.

Consider the plea, I love the 1911 but when I hear "Bring enough gun" I don't think caliber, I think one ready for infallabe function. If you had to choose a 1911 or an M&P out-of-the-box to defend yourself, which image does your mind conjure up?

If you're just wanting the pony of the side of the slide, I wouldn't stop you.

But for a basic 1911, there are better choices for the money...and I've owned several (currently just 2). Before you make a decision, be sure you know the differences between the 1911 and the 1991 models...avoid being surprised by the plastic parts later

Regarding getting any gun: get online, shop and have it sent to your FFL. You have an entire nation of guns at your fingertips.
