I've been looking for about a week for a local dealer who would sell Black Powder. (I'm in New York, Westchester, not the City) Gone to many places and they only deal in substitutes. I've found one Goex dealer way north of me, 6 hour drive one way, who sells it but I'm saving that drive as a last resort. I've checked Midway, and Natchez but my Search-Fu must be weak. What I'm loading for is an original Springfield Trapdoor Carbine circa 1884. I've been using Pyrodex in it so far but I kind of want to shoot the traditional stuff out of it. I currently reload the .45-70, .35 Remington, 8mm Mauser, 7.62x54r, and am gearing up for 7.5x55mm Swiss.

Anyhow, I ask the powers to be here at THR (Who have helped me so many other times before) Where on earth can I acquire black powder here in New York? I've been tempted to drive to Pennsylvania and try to find some but a friend said that interstate transportation of explosives may not be a good idea lol

Anyone at all in the same boat?

You might try Maine Powder House, while I've never done business with them I hear they're good folks. You'd have to order at least 5 pounds though. The more you order the less/pound shipping is. If you know any other BP shooters, they might split an order with you.

Here is some information I got from Coonies Black Powder. You can only order by email and you have to buy a 25# case at a time.

Here is the email: [email protected]

We will need to know your zipcode to figure out what the shipping cost will be for a case of powder shipped to you. Here is the price of powder with out shipping charges. Goex- 1fg,2fg,3fg,& 4fg is all $9.95/lb. Goex- Cannon & Cowboy is $10.75/lb. Goex- Cartridge is $11.25/lb. Goex- Express 1fg,2fg,& 3fg is $16.00/lb. Swiss- 1fg,2fg,& 3fg is all $17.50/lb. We also carry Goex- Pinnacle (a black powder substitute) in 2fg & 3fg at $17.50/lb. or Pinnacle E-Z Load (sticks) in .45 cal. or .50 cal. at $18.50 a bottle (100 sticks ea. per bottle).
Hope this helps you some with your request. Let us know what powder you will be needing and your zipcode and we can quote the total cost shipped from our door to yours. Best regards, Shawn.

This info is about a year old so prices might be different today.

Often, a dealer will order in black powder in small lots of about 5 pounds to simplify the storage requirements they have to meet. When such dealers get a supply of powder in, it is usually sold to one or more local cronies within the day. A 4 hour drive could prove very disappointing.

If New York alows it, you would be much better off just ordering four pounds from Grafs and paying the hazmat.

Just so people know the Hazmat fee isn't something the Government demands it's the shipping companies. They know they have you by the short hairs and the want some more money out of you. This is a direct result of restricted competition and collusion of the few shipping companies.

If anyone is interested, 49CFR covers Hazmat shipping. It's a DOT reg and Canada has just about a carbon copy as an MOT reg. All shippers must comply, even the military.

Nah, might should just git back on at some of the earlier posts. Plenty of good information, there.

In fact, am rapidly considering becoming a convert to making it, myself. What with that my insurance is paid up, and all...

Much appreciated everyone. I'll probably be calling a few of these places the middle of next month when I get some spare cash lol. I was hoping for a can or two but if 5lbs is the limit I'll go that way. Won't be shooting much Black Powder, only have the .45-70 and even that I'll only get 10 rounds off at my local range (County Run, No Black Powder allowed except at the 25/50 yard targetes but the RO is a history buff like me and has expressed interest in seeing her in action lol)

Going to be switching to a pure lead bullet as well. Thought I was using them but I was told that wheel weights aren't

Again, much appreciated everyone I'll be sure to have my photographer friend get a few pictures off at the range when I do eventually fire it.
