Yesterday morning I took my oldest son out to give him some lessons in calling turkey, prior to our upcoming Mew Mexico turkey hunt. Unfortunately, his career, mine, and his busy schedule with the military and LE, getting married, and a number of other impending life circumstances, have prevented us from finishing a hunt we started 20 yrs. ago.

So yesterday was a morning we had reserved some needed time for "turkey hunting 101", it went very well. just after the sky started to get light I located a gobbler, to which we set out to find a good spot to start working him. Things came together very well and we were able to call 3 gobs and some hens that were with them in multiple times, letting them get bored and walk away then call them back in again for another show of strutting and gobbling. After about an hour of playing with these birds, we finally let those birds leave for the last time, and then started back towards to vehicle.

This is when our already fantastic morning took a turn of coincidence, and certainly put the icing on the cake, so too speak. While walking back we saw a man and a woman walking toward us, they approached us with out stretched hands, and the introductions began. As it turned out, we had bumped into the president of the Arizona sector of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Donna Van Vlack and her husband Scott. What an honor, and the timing was perfect, considering I was teaching both my Son and his wife the art of turkey hunting. I just exchanged e-mail with Ms. Van Vlack, and have been invited to participate in the youth mentoring program. How awesome is that?
