Long story short, I finished a job today and was tidying up my tools and talking to the lady in charge of the building. They have a lot of kids there and she was talking about their recent need to develop safety plans since the Sandy Hook tragedy and she wished she could carry a gun at work.
Well, I couldn't let that go unanswered so I responded that I wished everyone had the right to carry at work, and that all people who could legally carry would, and therefore we'd all be a safer and less criminal society. And from there, off we went into the whole range of question and answer. This wasn't an anti by any means, she was just misinformed and under-informed in every way relating to firearms.
The key was at the end of the conversation, she thanked me profusely and said "this was a great talk and I learned so much, and you were very matter-of-fact in everything." I asked her what was the one key thing she is taking away, and she said this: "the most important thing you said was why semi-automatics are so popular, and that's because they are very good and developed at what they do; which is protecting people whether they are cops, military, or civilians." I thanked her for listening and don't forget to vote.
Lastly, I really want to thank the good folks on THR for providing me with a lot of common sense comments that I could easily use in this discussion. It wasn't an argument, it wasn't divisive, it was just a nice calm conversation where she honestly wanted to learn. And to that end, I'm thankful that reading THR over the years has made me a much more intelligent speaker on these issues. Thank you all, keep up the good work.
