I finally got a chance to take my mom shooting today! She's gone with me once before but didn't really shoot much. We've been having some nice weather so I made the drive to her house; her neighbor has a range in his backyard, how convenient!

She's been talking about getting a gun for SD since she moved further into the sticks back in November, so I thought this might be a good learning experience for us both.

We had a pretty good time, I think she enjoyed herself for her first time really handling guns (as far as I know, anyway). She got an empty casing from each caliber and I labeled and made copies of the pictures for her to show her friends at work.

Started with the Savage .22lr at 25yds. As you can see from the picture, she had some issues with the scope and her eyeglasses. I couldn't figure out what the problem was and she insisted she could see the crosshairs and the target so we went with what we had. The stock was also a little big for her so she only shot about 10 rounds. She put 5 into a 4-inch bull at 25 yards and rang a 12"x12" plate at 120yds 3 out of 5!

Then I let her pick and she wanted to try the Glock 19 next. I didn't get any pictures though, I was helping with the slide and showing sight alignment and grip. The slide was a little difficult for her to pull back and it took a little bit to get her grip situated since she has small hands. She shot 12 rounds, hitting the paper twice at 7 yards. Oddly, she was shooting high (don't most new glock shooters go low left?), I'm not sure she really understood how the sights worked, she said she did though.

Next up was the Taurus 856 with laser grips. I think this one was her favorite; it's the only one she asked me for a refill! Out of the first cylinder, the first 2 shots were single action (to get used to the recoil) and the other 4 were double action. She got them all in the 4-inch bull with one flyer, to which she immediately proclaimed that she "pulled the trigger too fast" and if she'd "have pulled it slower" that wouldn't have happened! :D I saw the learning value of the Crimson Trace grips today. My mom (and I)could track the laser and see what was happening as she pulled the trigger. Interestingly, after a few shots I could see the dot start to quiver slightly. I think it was due to her anticipation of the shot breaking and tightening up on the gun.

Here's a pic of her with her group. Not bad for a first timer!

And a picture of her shooting. Pretty good stance!

We closed out the (too short) day with my AR15. We shot the conversion first which she seemed to like. I didn't get a picture of her rocking the 3 point sling though! We took it off, it didn't fit her too well. Target is at 25 yards but I forgot to change it so it was hard to tell who's was who's.

I put the .223 bolt back in and gave her a mag of M855 to try out. The first shot got a muttered "Damn!" and after the second shot she said "I'm done." She said the problem wasn't the recoil, she didn't like the "blast wave" that came back when she shot it.

I gave her my sunglasses for this picture and told her to look "bad-a#%".

She said that she'd like to get a gun "like the black rifle, but shoots the bullets from that one (the glock)." I told her it was possible, but would cost around $1k to get one. She said we'll look into other options. After a little talking, we're thinking a full size revolver would be good. 4" Model 10 or GP100, something like that; with a laser grip of course!

I asked her if she would want to go again sometime and was met with a fairly enthusiastic "Sure!". I'm gonna try and drag her to the next gunshow too.

One more picture. This one was just for fun. My mom keeps it gangsta!

Wow man, that's really cool getting your mom out shooting. Glad she enjoyed it.
You may not have them available for her to try but if she likes the 9mm she may like a Keltec-sub2000 and Glock19 sharing mags and ammo.
Or maybe see if she likes a lever action and then you could look at a .357 lever and revolver combo. Even load revolver with .38 special and the lever with .357. Just like she can load the Glock with a "softer" 147gr and the Keltec with a 115 +p+.
The possibilities are there to get your mom well defended in the "sticks" since she's willing to learn.
And I love the "gangsta" shot.

looks like you had one fun day and some excellent shooting! it is always fun to welcome a new person to the shooting sports and have them actually enjoy themselves. i also noticed that your mom showed some excellent trigger finger disipline...looks like she had a pretty good teacher! get her out shooting again soon and above all, shoot safe!

My mom and her sister keep talking about wanting to shoot and get their CCW's.. I've offered on several occasions to take them to the range and they always find an excuse not to.. Don't know if they are scared? Or scared of what I might stick in their hand to shoot first (full house .454 casull anyone)

So what advice can you guys offer up to get "rural raised" sisters with me to the range so can teach them and get them ready for ccw?

Yeah those sun glasses sure do look the gangster part. :D I like the one with the evil black gun and the sunglasses. Look! Crazy gun-toting American mums... Ha ha. Its all good you guys had fun. I like one of those, but I am left eye dominant and right handed which means I inhale all the crap coming off as the shells eject so I am not much of a rifleman. Shoot pistols very well though.

It's funny you mention the Kel-tec sub2000. I was interested in them until I saw one in person. I don't think I'd ever buy, much less trust my life to a gun held together with phillips head screws all around. I was thinking a Marlin Camp9 or something along those lines would be good. I mentioned the levergun idea to her and got an intrigued eyebrow raise. The problem is that she dislocates her jaw when I tell her the prices I pay for my stuff, so cost is a big factor. She really liked the revolver though and a good model 10 doesn't cost much.

She needed a few reminders about keeping her finger off the trigger, mostly because it's so short it barely reaches the trigger guard. Small hands gave her some trouble with the cylinder release too, maybe a ruger revolver would be easier? She did good though! I stopped her halfway through a cylinder and asked how many rounds she had left. The answer came without hesitation!

I'm thinking whatever gun she gets, laser grips are a must. She sleeps with her glasses off and can't see ANYTHING without them. A red dot in the dark would still show up pretty good I imagine. It's gonna take some work to get her to the point where she can handle a weapon by herself without faltering my confidence, but we're getting there.

I'm surprised she never said anything about the smoke or the smell. THe way the wind was blowing, we were catching all the "gun farts" right in the face. Not too bad with my .38 handloads though. They kinda smell like pork BBQ!

I've been trying to get my sister to shoot with me for years. She's got one of those ridiculous fears that guns are self motivated killers. One of her boyfriends (who was on my hit list) made her shoot a revolver of some sort so I'm sure that didn't help things much. She'll be here Sunday, maybe I can talk her into a couple rounds of .22. Everybody likes shooting steel spinners right? Got a good grin out of ol' mom when she rang that plate at 120 yards! Gotta say, I did too though!

I think I'm gonna try and get her to the indoor range next time, they have rentals. I told her she should get a stress ball and start exercising her new found trigger finger so she wouldn't have as much trouble with the heavy trigger next time. I think her trouble with the slide was a lack of technique. I had trouble with the slide on my first auto too.

Making memories on a beautiful spring day, it doesn't get much better.

Never forget to stress safe gun handling over and over to novices, as I know you do. It's all about muzzle control.

Good shooting.

Looks like a great time, neat that she took to it so readily.

She said that she'd like to get a gun "like the black rifle, but shoots the bullets from that one (the glock)." I told her it was possible, but would cost around $1k to get one.

How about a Kel-Tec Sub2000? You could even get a Glock-magwelled version so you could share mags with her at the range. I've never heard of anyone being unhappy with their Sub2000. Course I don't know everyone with a Sub2000, but I do spend a lot of time on THR.

Mom has just made your life soooooo much easier., if she's like my mom, she has everything in the world. Now you have an endless list of M-day, b-day, and Xmas gifts.Plus, you've given her the thing she wants most:time with her son.:D

Nice selection of firearms. Congrats on sharing the sport.

But damn, you just raised the bar for mothers day.

Me too. It was an hour drive one way for me. Her neighbor has quite the setup though, even if his shooting bench is a little..well..big. Targets to 120 with stops at 25, 50 75, and 90. Plywood for paper targets and pieces of plate steel for that satisfying *DING!*

I have a feeling I'll be making the drive again soon!

Back in the '60s, when my parents came to summer camp for visitors day, my mom accompanied me to my favorite activity... riflery (of course)! We had an honest-to-God army drill seargent as a riflery counselor, and he was amazed as my mother out-shot everyone else there, including him!

Fast-forward to a cruise off the French Riviera and the ship has skeet-shooting off the fan-tail. Mom and I take a few rounds, and who comes up to shoot but Robert Stack, the actor, who was also a reknown shotgunner. Mom loaded up the 20 gauge and proceeded to kick Mr. Stack's keister round after round. He was not amused. :neener:

Go Mom!

I understand you mentioning her jaw becoming dislocated everytime you talk price. Well, as the good son you are, don't forget... Mother's Day is right around the corner ;) What mom wouldn't love the gift of a new pistola?

You are a lucky man to have a Mom that gives shooting a try, and more so that she likes it!

My Mom grew up rural and was comfortable with shooting as a kid but grew up to be a yuppie liberal afraid that guns would stalk and attack her even if she drove by a Gander Mountain too slow (on her way to Kohls to buy entirely too much expensive clothing).
