I hate New Jersey (Model 17)

So I was in my local gun shop tonight looking for scope bases, when one of the employees was showing another customer a revolver. Being a 686+ owner, when I saw a blued revolver with full underlug and Hogue rubber grips, I immediately thought "586." Nope. It was a recent vintage 17 with 10 shot cylinder and 6-inch barrel.

Maybe one or two scratches near the front sight. The price: $275. They must have stolen it off of whoever traded it in. I didn't check for a revision (dash) number.

The problem: for each handgun, the New Jersey Peoples' Republic requires a purchase permit for each handgun. I have no unused permits and it would take too long to get another before I move to MD.

Maybe if I'm lucky, it will still be available in a month and I can have them ship it to a MD FFL:banghead:
 
You can buy it without a permit, you just can not leave the store with it. Most shops will hold on to it for you while you wait for a permit, so I can not see why they will not hold it and send it when you move.

Yep, I know the feeling I left New Jersey (Trenton) 49 years ago and have not looked back!

How long does it take to get a permit to buy a handgun in NJ these days?

I found myself in a similar situation. Being in Las Vegas just before the 4th of July, I actually found a nice 617 -2. Not quite a bargain like the one mentioned in the OP, but in the $400 range. Real nice condtion.

After checking the CA roster, my fear became reality. A -2 was not on the list, meaning "No can do".

When I told the guys at the store that -4 thru -6 was ok, the would only shake their heads ....

Somebody mentioned, the 10 shot model 17 was the one with the alloy cylinder, which seems to be the same cylinder they fitted in the early 617.

Believe it or not, coming to MD from a place like Jersey is a pretty big step up. No purchase permits, no laws that mandate "smart guns" the second they become saleable, we're NFA friendly (including machine guns), and that pesky one-gun-a-month law is easily gotten around by filling out a simple form designating one as a collector.

So spare us, huh?:rolleyes:

Like said already in this thread several times, buy it now and have the dealer send it to you next month when you move. I'm sure the dealer won't have a problem with that at all.

X2. Move to VA instead. If you're working in DC, it still allows the commute. The gun laws are MUCH better in VA than MD.
 
I left NJ 47 yrs. ago. I have lived in MD for 31 yrs. MD may not be as easy as VA, but it is a lot better than NJ, particularly after you get a collector designation.
 
My suggestion would be for you to send me the store info so a I can call and have it shipped to me as I can buy all the firearms I want (or until I run out of money).:neener:
 
I'm going on a multi-year rotational assignment outside the beltway and will eventually return to my job in New Jersey*. This time I will be smart and live in PA. The one year I spent in NJ taught me to never live here again with the ever changing (for the worse) gun laws. It took me 7 months to get an FOID & purchase permits.

Only incorporation of the 2nd via the 14th will cause NJ to change. And that will still be an uphill fight.

I will take your advice and see if I can put the gun on layaway for a while. it won't take that long for me to get an MD license and regulated firearms card.

*Why would I even consider returning to work in NJ? Would you pass up the chance to work in the mecca of weapons/munitions R&D?

Ever been to Jersey? MD most certainly is an improvement.

JJBDuke - You don't need a license here in MD. All you've got to do is watch a 10 minute safety video (or take a class) and then fill out a small card stating that you watched the video or took the class, and that's it. When you go to buy handguns or "regulated" long guns (AR's, AK's) you show the card, and you're good to go.

Not ideal, but I'm willing to bet it's a breath of fresh air compared to your current surroundings.

BTW - what part of MD will you be staying in? I'm in the Columbia/Laurel area, and would be more than happy to meet you at a range sometime to out some rounds downrange.

Also, when you get there, I highly suggest joining the Maryland Shooter's Forum over at mdshooters.com. Tons of good folks, and lots of great information.
 
To end the story, I went back and checked it out. They were willing to transfer it to an other FFL. However, the fees to do that were exorbitant (well in excess of what it would cost to ship).

I also found out why it was only $275. I hadn't seen the right side of the barrel where there was a lot of bluing worn off and someone attempted to cover (poorly) it up with a blue Sharpie.
