I received this from my sister. While I'm pretty cynical where the UN is concerned, the alarmist tone of this message makes it kinda hard to take serious. Does anyone know if this is for real?

The United Nations is going to raise your taxes.

That is not a typographical error -- the United Nations -- not the United States -- is about to impose taxes on each and every one of us unless we take action to stop them TODAY!

The United Nations, the same collection of villains and rogues who brought you the oil for food scam, now want control of your wallet, your freedom and your sovereignty.

For those of you who haven't heard; the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST) gives the United Nations total and absolute control of the seas (and possibly the air as well). This supreme authority would be administered by a U.N. agency called the Seabed Authority. The Seabed Authority would be organized according to the General Assembly model; one nation -- one vote and thus give an organized block of third world nations hostile to the United States the power to:

-- Impose Taxes on the American Public

-- Cripple the United States Navy and Leave us Susceptible to Ship Based Cruise Missile Attack

-- Empower Rogue Nations Such as China

-- Aid Terrorist Activity Against the United States

JUST WHAT IS THE LAW OF THE SEA TREATY (LOST)

LOST is simply another United Nations power grab, initially conceived and brought to the world stage in the 1970s.

Under LOST, the United Nations would take outright control of over 70% of the earth's surface and natural resources.

President Ronald Reagan refused to sign LOST in 1982, but in 1994 President Clinton signed the treaty and sent it to the Senate for ratification.

The Republican controlled Senate literally sat on this legislation for almost ten years and much of the credit goes to Senator Jesse Helms who was the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for much of that time.

Then several months ago, Republican Senator, Richard Lugar, who presently chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee mysteriously gave LOST precedence over other pending international agreements to combat terrorism and literally rammed LOST through the committee under the cover of darkness.

Apparently, Senator Lugar has LOST his mind.

Lugar held two days of hearings and allowed only those supporting LOST to testify. Then he called for the motion to be passed by unanimous consent -- basically that means that everybody voted for it but no one is actually on record as having voted for it -- our legislators often use this maneuver to "cover their tracks" when passing unpopular legislation.

And now, as we speak, Sen. Lugar is exerting pressure on Majority Leader Bill Frist to bring the matter to the full Senate -- WITHOUT DEBATE and WITHOUT A RECORDED VOTE. So much for democracy...

WE HAVEN'T WON THIS BATTLE YET

Contrary to popular believe, the Law of the Sea Treaty is not dead in the water (no pun intended). Despite your initial efforts to put a stop to this menace, pressure is still being exerted from behind the scenes to pass this nightmare.

LOST would have been ratified without the American public's knowledge were it not for a cadre of conservative activists and radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh. The initial public outcry against LOST was enormous and many of our political leaders apparently interceded to stop LOST dead in it's tracks.

But while some of our legislators are sincere in their attempts to stop LOST, don't be fooled by the "dog and pony" show that is presently underway. The influence peddlers and the special interests who support LOST are pushing the matter and our elected leaders -- many of whom are simply making a show of opposing LOST -- WILL buckle now that they believed the heat has died down.

These special interests are not just your usual left-wing activists and ideologues. Among the supporters are oil corporations and large multi-national firms who are more than willing to trade American sovereignty for increased profits.

Other supporters include left-wing career employees within the State Department and even Vice President Dick Cheney.

Several days ago, Congressman Henry Hyde, Chairman of the House International Relations Committee ordered his staff to prepare for hearings on LOST. As of this writing, Congressman Hyde has REFUSED TO TAKE A STAND on LOST. But one thing is for sure; Hyde is in a HURRY and Washington insiders claim this hearing can take place as early as two weeks from now.

LOTS OF MONEY BUYS LOTS OF INFLUENCE

LOST will give the United Nations sole power to issue permits for fishing, drilling and mining operations at sea. Basically the United Nations will be able to charge exorbitant fees and taxes to companies wishing to mine and drill overseas -- fees that will be passed on to you at the gas pump.

LOST will give the United Nations sole power to levy taxes and impose production quotas on mining and oil production. The United Nations will be able to tell companies how much they are allowed to mine -- the very next gasoline shortage can and will be caused by a group of rogue third world nations literally cutting off our oil supply.

LOST will give the United Nations sole power to establish international courts and other agencies to enforce its dictates. The United Nations will be able to set up "kangaroo courts" to punish any American company that does not comply with it's arbitrary rules.

Provisions of LOST mandate that the United States must share certain technologies with other countries. These technologies will include military secrets.

Big oil and multi-national firms support LOST because they believe that it much easier to deal with one entity than many different entities. In common parlance, its easier to line the pockets of a few U.N. officials than to line the pockets of scores of world leaders. Its a recipe for graft and corruption.

But let's not get distracted. The real purpose of LOST is to STEAL OUR SOVEREIGNTY.

Scattered emails and letters aren't going to work this time. The special interests wield a lot of influence and throw a lot of money around. To effectively do battle, we need to flood fax machines and we need to show our leaders that there is a clearly defined centralized opposition.

Let's send the Senate a clear message TODAY. OUR FREEDOM IS NOT FOR SALE -- NOR CAN IT BE STOLEN BY A THIEF IN THE NIGHT!

total and absolute control of the seas (and possibly the air as well).

When I was a kid, the Village Idiot/Drunk often claimed he owned various properties belonging to others. He was beaten up with regularity.

Funny stuff, in my mind.

I wish it were funny, Thumper.

It's real. A sovereign America is going away, thanks mostly to a few dedicated ideologues aided by those who refuse to take this kind of thing seriously.

I dunno, man...this thing passing in the U.S.seems like a stretch.

The UN has no more authority than it can enforce, i.e. No more than your average class of fourth graders.

Thumper, aren't you being pretty generous when speaking of Kofi's capabilities? Most classes of 4th graders I know could whip the UN  .

For the most part, the military forces in the EU have been drawn dow to the point they are little more then a constabulary. No EU nation has the capability to project power very far beyond it's borders or sustain an expeditionary force without significant logistics assistance from us. I find it interesting that they have taken all the money they don't spend on defense because we have always defended them and poured it into their socialist economies, they still can;t compete with us. Perhaps some day they might figure out that freedom is what makes the difference. Until then, I'll remain unconcerned.

The United States Navy is already environmentally friendlier than any other in history. We do not dump plastic bags of trash in the ocean anymore. We only use active sonar in peacetime when we aren't going to kill whales. We have given back our Pacific firing range at Koholawe(sp) after cleaning it up. We are just about off of Vieques firing range in Puerto Rico. We bathe the prisoners at Guantanamo probably far more than they ever did themselves before. We do not illegally pump bilges or holding tanks overboard. We are currently employing the Marine Corps to clean up Iraq.

And every time we meet an enemy fleet in hostilities, we create a bunch of artificial reefs for sea life. :D

How PC can we get? The UN to cripple the USN? Never, only Congress can do that, and the Army War College is proposing just that lately so the least efficient branch can afford to armor Humvees and keep playing footsie with H&K.

Hate to break this to you but the ability of the UN to tax us is happening now. The vast majority of the UN's budget comes from us already. They are taxing us indirectly, by proxy, through the complicity of Uncle Sam. Want to see what happens if you try to withhold that payment?

The UN is toothless to project power. It does have an insidious power when members of the US ogvernment implement UN agenda points on their own or as directed by their political handlers and it goes on all the effin' time.

LOST is one such agenda point. It has numerous quiet sponsors throughout fed.gov in general and in the state department in particular. Sen. Idiot Lugar is one such congressional sponsor. He originally wanted to have the treaty up for a midnight vote with no record. Fortunately he was countered and sufficient dust was raised to make its passage doubtful.

Clinton's administration has already dealt with the Communist Chinese AS IF THE TREATY WAS ALREADY RATIFIED. The end result is the US forked over to the Chinese information on US seafloor sensors designed to detect Chinese submarines.

Yes, LOST is dangerous and if defeated, it will be back.

US blissninnies will always try to sell out US sovereignty. Watch out for the FTAA (Free Trade Agreement of the Americas) headed for congress sometime after the election. If you like NAFTA, WTO, and GATT you will LOVE FTAA.

Like Halleys Comet

I last saw this about three years ago. I first saw this during the first Clinton Administration. I expect I'll see it again.

Stand down.

Still Important

The LOST is something they have been trying to pass for a while. They operate under the theory they'll pass it when no one is paying attention. It's good to let the congress-critters especially the newbies, that this bill would make them persona non grata.

I'm trying to remember offhand how many carrier groups the UN has that can be used to enforce these rules, or for that matter tell the US Navy where they can or cannot go. What exactly can the UN do to our offshore oil wells if we produce too much oil from them- blockade them and with what?

This whole thing is so absurd that it couldn't possibly be real.

You're all laboring under the misguided conception that the next Dem in office won't sign us up for it hook line and sinker.

How can you be so sure that it can't happen?
The UN has no aircraft carriers because they don't need them. They steal what they want to, when they want to. Look where we are! We are mopping up the result of the last decade of malfeasance in Afghanistan and Iraq. The United Nations stole 10 billion dollars in the Oil For Palaces program from the Iraqi people. The UN watched in silence as the Muslims turned an entire country, Afghanistan, into a terrorist traing camp.
We now have 3000 dead from 9-11 and nearly another thousand soldiers dead in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is costing us a fortune, billions of dollars to clean up this mess. And we have a Democrat presidential candidate who dreams of giving the UN even more power. And by some polls Jean Flipflop Kerry leads George W. Bush. This is not a joke, not an internet hoax. This is real, people. It is happening now.
