I recently bought a Sig 716 in 308 caliber. I'm shopping for a scope and like the on paper specs of the Leupold AR series. The scope has a bullet drop compensator calibrated for the 223.

Would this be a totally inappropriate scope for the 308?

What would you recommend in the 4x12 range?

I believe Nikon makes and M-308 scope similar to their M223 line.

roughly, most center-fire calibers between 223rem and 308win have a fairly similar trajectory out to 500-600 yards or so. some like 220swift or various magnums obviously differ.

by roughly, i mean, if you have a 100 yard zero, then hold a couple inches high at 200, and 8 or so inches at 300, etc.

however, if you want to get more specific, then narrowing it to caliber isn't sufficient. you also need to select a bullet and a velocity. for instance, in 223rem, a 55g M193 doesn't have the same trajectory as the 62g or 75g. "Ball" 308win won't be the same as M118.

and if you're really interested in precision, then the ugly truth is that your velocity will change with wear on your barrel, your elevation, the temperature, etc.

so what good is a calibrated bullet drop compensator? none imho. get a mil-hash reticle and learn the dope for your rounds. write it down and tape it to the side of your stock.

if your going with a Leupold I'd go with one with mil dots or hash marks , if the BDC is what your realy looking for for I'd go with a Nikon BDC , you may want to check out Nikon's Spot-On software it will save you alot of time at the range and get you hitting your mark with a lot less ammo down range , , if you are looking for a rang finding BDC scope , check out a Shepherd scope , I got a 6x18 Shepherd this year and I love it

Which line of Leupold scopes has the hash marks?
varmint hunter, Boon & Crockett, and some of there tactical scopes have hash marks , bdc lines, I just went to MidwayUSA and found 6 or so with some sort of lines under the cross hairs that would work ,

What scope are you looking at? I just went to the Leupold site, and the Mark AR's were all mildot or duplex.
