I have a New Model Vaquero in .45LC; bright stainless; 4 5/8th's" Barrel. I have fired EXACTLY 20 rounds through it. Whenever I go to the range, it gets left behind. I just enjoy shooting defensive auto's more.

So, here is the trade: Anyone think I should be talked out of trading it for a G19? I really need a mid-sized 9.

I already have a Taurus PT99, Colt series 80 5", G27, SA XDm .40, Ruger Blackhawk .44, S&W 340 .357, S&W 686 .357, Beretta Tomcat .32, Ruger LCP, Ruger .22/45.

Since I have exceeded the gun budget for the year, I need to dump something to pick up a new 9; could use some group advice to avoid "Traders Regret"!
 
i drastically suffer from trader's regret also i would probably trade it or sell it if it never sees any use. A useless gun is...well...useless! Have fun with your new nine.
 
Turning a little used gun into one that fulfills a real need is always a good trade.
 
I'd say you're missing out on another possible route. Have you shot a more modern double action revolver? A .357 Mag, .44Mag or one of the S&W's that shoots the .45ACP or 10mm/.40S&W from moon clips? Maybe you just went too far to the side with the single action cowboy style? One of these double action wheelguns may well be a nice compromise and offer some more inviting variety from what you're shooting now but not be TOO far different.
 
Do you enjoy shooting a Glock? I see you have a 27, but do you really enjoy shooting it?

There are plenty of other fine 9mm pistols out there, both metal and poly.

I've started selling some guns and other items. Right here on this forum, I've sold a Marlin Camp 9 and a Glock 17, and am in the middle of purchasing something I will enjoy more.

I say consolidate your gun accumulation, especially the pieces you don't really care for and don't fill a need. Don't let them become safe queens.

I advocate this, too. I recently turned a finished but currently unused Caspian 1911 frame into a Glock 23. Turned that into a like-new Colt Commander. Whoo Hoo!

And that G23 is my rub in all this - I see you have a Glock so know what that's about, but have you done a few hundred rounds with a 19 or 23? I owned that G23 for right at 48 hours. Took it straight to the range, then straight to the want ads that night. Gone at my asking price by the day after. I just could not love the mid-sized Glock's grip, trigger, or the over-large slide and butt that made CC not an option in my demanding eyes. I LIKED the Glock's reliability, accuracy, and simple manual of arms. But there was more to it than that for me. For a mid-sized 9, I'm now open to things like a S&W 908/3913, Sig P6, a Colt Commander in 9mm, or even a compact S&W 469.

On the other hand, you've established the Vaquero is nothing special for you. As much as I love history and guns, most SA "cowboy" guns leave me really cold, too (Except the S&W American/Russian/Schofield design - but that's another story). So trading it for a like value Glock gives you a "free trial" on the Glock, and if you don't like it, you can sell or trade them pretty easily. More easily than a Vaquero, so I also look at it as moving one semi-liquid asset into an equal value, but more highly liquid asset. And that trade has value in it on its own.

Correct. I love shooting big bore wheelguns. My first ever handgun purchase was a Redhawk .44 on my 21st Bday. I traded that gun & it is my biggest regret ever. The 686 I still have is actually my best shooter by far & will never be traded.

For whatever reason, that Vaquero just is not floating my boat. It is not 686 accurate, nor is it .44 exhilerating.
 
Keep in mind this is not an impulse trade, this is trading a gun that you just really do not have any interest in for something you do. Impluse trades are often regretted, these trades, not so much.

You didn't mention that bit of your own shooting history before. Given this new info trade it for a .44 Magnum or even bigger. A 5 inch barrel S&W.460 has some real prescence and is great fun to shoot but you'll definetly want to get into reloading for it even if it's only with a slow single stage press. After all it's not a gun you'll shoot HUGE amounts of ammo through. The S&W .460 set up with the compensator and reloaded with some medium to heavy bullets pushed by a charge of H110 powder produces a VERY satisfying flame show and horrendous BOOOM! ! ! but without a punishing blow to the hands. The guy that reloads these and has let me try a round now and then when we're at the range together used to reload .44Mag to try to achieve the same effect but he said the cases just couldn't hold enough powder. Keep in mind this is for the SHOW and has absolutely nothing at all to do with hitting power or anything in any way at all of a practical note other than promoting a taste for blue rare steaks on the BBQ following a range session.... :D

He's going to help me load up some .500S&W ammo with the same recipe for my TC Encore short barrel rifle. I can hardly wait.... :D

I think I will stay with the Blackhawk .44 for my big-bore itch. If I am feeling the need for speed, I can always run something hot through it. For those really bored days, I might drop a hot 158 gr into my scandium 340. After the fracture heals, I'll be back to my auto's!
 
Any other prospects instead of the G19 I should consider?

Thanks for the responses so far; looks like I am feeling better about this trade. Next question: Who would vote for another option to the G19?

Must be a 9, must be an auto w/ at least 12 rnds, must be mid sized. I am a Glock fan, so in my mind the 19 is the best choice. Before I dive in, any other prospects I should consider??

If you don't have a Hi-Power you might try one.
I am on my third one and really enjoy this one, I have put Cylinder and Slide
trigger hammer and sear in it and now have a trigger almost as nice as a good 1911
I purchased it like new for $549.00 and have less than $300.00 in parts, so I am happy.
Until I shot a good 1911 I never realized how bad the trigger was on my first Hi-power.
Have you considered CZ 75 or 85?Or maybe my new favorite in an inexpensive auto the
Witness Elite Match...
Well, good luck and I agree with the other guys , if it doesn't really float your boat sell it and get one that does...
That is the best part of our hobby, you don't have to lose a lot to try different guns.
as long as you sell yourself that is, trading in is another story.

It's been my sad experience that this rationale is almost always a formula for buyer/seller remorse. My worst "deals" always seem to have been preceeded by the desire to have the latest hottie on the block; then, whoops, no ready cash at hand; followed by rationalizing away a gun ("I'm really not using this one anymore"); then, not long after the infamous transaction-"man, why did I get rid of that 'loser'? Guess I'll have to find another one just like it some day..."

Excercising patience means that someday you can have them both. But then, who am I to talk? :eek:
 
If that Ruger Vaquero doesn't

make you swoon every time you touch it, like mine do:D, then sell it and buy something that you will use. The G19 and the G23 are great guns and, despite one opinion, are easily concealed. Since you have the 27 I would go for the 23 but go with the 9 if you must. Better yet, get the 23 and then get a 9mm barrel.:D Your list of guns indicates that you have the spectrum pretty well covered so go with your heart.
 
Take a look at the CZ P-01. They call it a compact, but I'd say it is midsized. It has an aluminum frame, and isn't much heavier than a polymer gun. Comes with 14 round mags, and you can use the 16 round mags from the CZ 75 (with no gap in the grip if you buy new base plates) or the 19 round mags from the SP-01 if you don't mind the mag sticking out of the bottom. The gun fits my hand unlike any other I have ever picked up. Should be about the same price as a Glock.
 
How can you regret getting rid of something that you ain't attached to? Gun trading is one of the few opportunities to for a win-win situation assuming you can find someone who has what you want and wants what you have.

My Vaquero goes with me to the range often. I enjoy shooting the big .45 and would be very sad if I had to get rid of it for some reason. Glocks are good guns but they do not spark any lust in me whatsoever.
 
Trade it. Life is for living and guns are for shooting.

I would take that Glock 19, keep the 686, the 340, and the 22/45, and get rid of the rest.

The 9 is for less expensive practice for both me and the wife; A little more shootable for her than the .40, and still enough gun for SD. Plan would be to ugrade with Heine Straight 8's, extended slide release, steel guide rod & plug, Pachmayr slip on. On paper, I agree with wanting a .40. In researching actual effectiveness, I really do not see a consistant disparity between the .40 & the 9. Might enter an occasional Glock shoot with it.

Buying a 9 barrel for the 23 may be a thought---not a bad idea.
 
+1 for Browning HP. Really, really nice gun. The current Mk III is about as good as they get once the mag disconnect safety is removed. They're not like a 1911; they don't need a lot of tinkering and gunsmithing to be accurate and shootable.

Have you ever considered what H&K has to offer? I've owned 4 Glocks (two 19s, a 26, and a 27). Glocks are great guns..especially for the money, but after I bought my first H&K I realized I had been missing out. I could go on and on about how great they are, but I'll just say that I no longer own a single Glock pistol, and am much happier with my H&K pistols:) Here's my every-day carry rig, a P2000sk 9mm (sorry for the crappy pic):
