hi point kill shots

a few weeks a go me and a friend of mine we leaving STL to head back for Springfield illinois, when we took the wrong exit and ended up in east STL at 2 in the morning on a friday night. we were low on gas and pulled in to a gas station to get some gogo juice. he went ion and pre paid while i waited to start pumping. when my friend was about 10 feet from the door we heard gun shots from inside and my friend hit the ground i thought he had been shot. i reached under the passengers seat and pulled out his hi point .45. as i was movie tword the store to gange banger came out adn i got 4 shots off 2 center mass on each of them. i had never fired a hi point befor but i put them down from about 35 yards. ( oh and my friend did not get shot he just ducked and covered when he heard the shots from in side). as a marine sgt in the MP's i prefer my M-9 but that hi point did the job.

Former Hi-Point owner here

And I don't know WHO would call those things reliable

I had the Hi-Point .380 - they're made here in Ohio, and dirt cheap, so I figured "What the hell" after having them recommended to me on several occasions.

NIB, first trip to the range, the thing jammed ~literally~ about every 3 rounds or so. IMO the ejection ports location and size don't seem to help too much. The design of the gun seems overall silly. I thought performance might get better with cleaning, more lubrication, etc. You could smear this thing in grease and clean it everyday, wouldn't matter. Every trip I took to my local range, I got the exact same performance from that thing. 2-3 FTE's per 9 round magazine. Took forever to put 200 rounds through it.

I thought maybe I had got the company lemon - til quite a few other people at my job started getting them, and having the exact same performance in EVERY CALIBER. When I asked the guys who recommended me this pistol if they had the same problems, they replied "Yeah.. but you know, those Hi-Points are like that. You just have to break them in"

Why anyone would simply accept that kind of performance from a NIB firearm of ANY type is beyond me.

about 600 rounds later (still FTE'ing every 2 or 3 rounds) I finally had enough and sold it. Got $80 for it at a local pawn shop - so I guess the only good thing about the whole experience was that I only lost $40. At the time, I had 3 other guns, so no big deal. SD was not a worry.

What worries me is that some people actually buy these things for self and home defense. What I have found to be true of guns moreso than anything else, "You get what you pay for."

I know some people cant afford fancy $1000 pistols every month to add to their huge collections - but ANYONE can save up $300 and get a decent pistol that will function as it is supposed to. Especially anyone reading this, as I'm sure their computer cost more than $300 in most cases. Believe me, I'm not rich by any means. My 1911 cost a hair under $400, but I made sure it was a good purchase before buying it. I refuse to compromise quality for price when it's something my life, or the life of my family members might depend on. I also know Hi-Point provides a lifetime warranty, but I simply would never deal with a company that produces such a terrible product.

This post is not to bash Hi-Point owners - I would never do that. Quite the contrary, I think if I could convince one person not to buy one, I could possibly be saving that persons life. In my own experience, and the experience of every single person I know who has owned a Hi-Point, the last thing I have ever heard used to describe them is the word "reliable"

Frankly, leonardtj, I'm glad you were able to stop the two BG's in 4 shots. It's quite possible if you needed it, you wouldn't have had the luxury of a 5th shot.

Hey I even shot one the other day! :D A friend of mine bought one of these for a house gun. I tried to talk him out of it to no avail but he's happy and it albi free so ...........! Anyway I was suprized that it did indeed shoot very well. I did notice that his adj. sights were set well left to get it centered on the target but it did adjust in and was albi free with ball ammo. Not my cup of tea but as they say different stroke for different folks .........:) .

This is probably the best statement so far in this thread.

I don't buy the "I can't afford a more expensive gun" excuse. In almost every case, the problem isn't "can't afford", it is "won't afford'.

Don't eat out for a couple of months. Drink at home instead of going to the bar for a few months. Little things like that add up quickly. Besides, isn't your life worth it?

You can get a much better gun that a Hi-Point, for less than $300. The Bersa Thunder comes to mind.
