I hope my rifle likes Hodgdon Hybrid 100V as much as my press does!

My FIL gave me his Dillon 550B since he isn't interested in reloading anymore. I'm using it to work up loads for my .300WM. I had significant variation in powder charges (about +/- 0.5 gr) with the first two powders I tried (RL-22 and IMR 4831). I just bought some Hybrid 100V and it meters much better in my press. Variation was +/- 0.2 grains.

I hope my rifle likes this powder as much as my press does. How well does H100V handle temperature variation? I'll be working up loads throughout the summer (temps around 80) but hunting in the winter (temps around 20).

100V is one of the new miracle powders that give higher velocities at accepted pressures. I had high hopes when I first bought it and it measured very easily. My first attempts using it was for .243 and it gave some decent accuracy. But I tried it in .270 WSM and 7 mm mag and just never could find a decent load with it. Later on, I got better results with W780 in all 3 of them. But finally, I found the best results of all for my .243 using Ramshot Hunter. They all meter extremely well. The 780 and Hunter meter even better than the 100V does and give me better accuracy. I haven't given up on the 100V yet but I'm concentrating on the other powders first. As far as the 7 MM Mag goes, I think I'll just stick with the long stick powders. They take more effort to meter, but hey, I hand trickle most all my rifle charges anyway.

Wombat,

I am not positive, but I believe both RL-22 and IMR 4831 are stick powders. Ball powders tend to give more consistent powder charges in the Dillon 550B in my experience. BL-C(2) and H335 are examples.

Yes, both RL-22 and IMR 4831 are extruded powders. The Alliant Reloder powders tend be a bit shorter and easier to measure than the IMR extruded powders, but both are more difficult than a fine ball powder.

I love the metering of Ramshot Hunter and Ramshot Magnum, and so far I've had great results with both (6.5x55 & 7mm RM). I've never tried Hybrid 100V although I've been tempted once or twice. Hodgdon doesn't list it as one of their "extreme" powders that are supposed to be temperature resistant. The only real test is to try and see though...

300 WM, is that winchester mag or Wheatherby mag?

I tried 100V in a winchester mag built on a herters U-9 action. I was working up a load for the 165 GMX Hornady bullet for use in elk hunting, possibly moose.

I ran into pressure signs and much more velocity than what the books said. Upon reloading the NEW winchester brass, the primer pockets were so loose they wouldn't hold a primer. A sharp rap on the bench would un-seat them. I gave up on using it, IF the groups would have been acceptable, I would have used it, but they weren't.

If you're using the dillon bar type measure, you can't expect much better powder measuring consistency. I never have used one of them for rifle loading on my 650. I use a Hornady case activated measure, much more consistent.

Interesting report snuffy. I didn't have any obvious pressure signs and I didn't measure velocities. Like you, I just didn't find any good sweet spot for 2 of the 3 rifles I tried it in. I tried quite a few weights using the OCW method. I had a bit of a dilemma choosing what kind of primer to use. It is definitely not a spherical powder like Hunter or 780, but it is very very short cut. I ended up using magnum primers figuring it wouldn't hurt anything and I wouldn't wonder whether I was getting complete burns.

Thanks for the info guys. I will look at the Ramshot powders suggested.

Snuffy, I've only ever used the press I have to reload. I don't know the difference between the two powder charge systems you discussed. I am using the powder charge bar.

ETA: I'm loading for .300 win mag.

Like Snuffy, I too ran into to pressure issues with my lot# of H100V.

I blew the primer out of a case and ruined it with a below "listed" max load in my .257Roberts. The max load with a 100gr bullet is supposed to be only a 44,000-45,000cup load, but give 3,100+fps.

At 10% below "book"(44.0gr), I'm at max for my rifle, (Ruger M77MkII) but at only 2,850fps. With a "similar" load with IMR4350 it gets 3,000fps. My lot # behaves much more like H380 or BLC2 than the IMR4831 suggested by Hodgdon...

I'm probably going to fertilize the azalea's with the H100V...........
