:) yep! i did it an went ahead and joined the NRA. being a long time fence sitter:uhoh: and after much thought:scrutiny: , i came to the conclusion that eventhough i don't subcribe to everything the NRA means to me...i can't stand idle as a gunowner/hobbyist and not support an organization that does it's best to give us "gunnies" a voice in the fight for our gun rights...basically, i used the reference to motorcycles and other hobbies as a comparison. it doesn't make sense to own/ride a moto and not join the AMA. same as a health professional and not join the AMA, APA,ADA, etc...or a mechanic not ASE certified etc...support the respective sport, profession or hobby's organization..that's what made sense to me..i could be wrong..YMMV:neener: i got the American rifleman subscription as i don't hunt..i figured it would have more diverse fireams info/stories than American hunter. i'll keep y'all posted as to what benefits i get out of it...;)

You did the right thing. The NRA isn't perfect and no other organization is perfect but they are the strongest voice we have. I do love the NRA because if it weren't for the NRA we would have already lost our gun rights, as we know them.
Ask not what the NRA can do for you but what you can do for the NRA and the RKBA. I know what the NRA has already done and that is the reason I am a loyal member.
Thanks for joining,

Jim

regrets...

man, i should have done this sooner:( ...as i missed attending the NRA convention when it came to Houston a while back:banghead: . i wish i could have been there..i'm sure it was a "blast"...as i'll be a newbie... i welcome all suggestions as to how i can maximize my membership privileges as i intend to get my $35 worth of contribution... thanks.

Probably shouldn't mention this NOW, but...if you'd waited to get one of their mailings, it would have been only $25 for a year or $70 for three.

Plus a free hat.

Man, just getting the magazine is worth the membership fee when you think of all the things that they try to do. Wait until they call you for a contribution to their political action committee to help support their legal efforts. Again, they are the loudest voice gun owners have.

I like American Rifleman. Plenty of different kinds of articles in there, even if it is rather ad-heavy. In the past year there's been ones on building your own rifle starting with a barrelled action, an overview of the evolution of the 12ga shotgun shell, and a long one reviewing Aimpoints, EOTechs, ELCANs, etc. .

Been an NRA member for almost 2 years now, and they haven't sent but a couple requests for more money. I think it's worth it.

I resigned, and haven't been back since the '80s. I have a problem with the entile "jackbooted thug" thing. It started to look promising when Moses was NRA President, but I alrady started to prefer the GOA. I have enough hats that I never wear, and more than enough gun-rags (magazines) to throw away.

yep! i did it an went ahead and joined the NRA.

Congratulations. I feel that you have added your voice to the largest organized group of gun owners in the country. And if the NRA does take a stance you don't subscribe to, then speak up and let them know. Belonging and supporting does not mean you have quietly accept everything. If the NRA does something you like, then let them know. If they do something you don't like, do the same thing. Without feedback the leadership can't know what the membership thinks and wants.

Good on you.

Anyone who has the money to shoot regularly has the money to join the NRA. While the NRA isn't a perfect organization, they are the best voice for gun owners on capital hill. If you still feel the need to support a more philosophically pure organization, you can always pony up the funds to join GOA as well.

In DC, money talks, and the NRA has more of it than any other gun rights org.

Money well spent!

There are other groups out there, GOA, JFPFO, etc (think I belong to all of them but the Pink Pistols). However, the NRA is the 800lb gorilla and I think the best first choice.

GOA no comprimise. NRA started to fritter our rights in 1968 and continued through the Brady Bill.

I was a member and quit, let my membership run out, in 1969.

Never again for those ba$_ard$.!

Good for you. While not perfect like others have mentioned the NRA is the best thing going for all gun owners. Whether you're a hunter, target shooter, plinker or just like to sit and fondle your guns it's the organization to be a member of.

It's on the top of my list if I get $25 in disposable income. I've got one of those $25 cards, a friend bought some dies and it had one it in that he gave me.

For an indication of the effectiveness of the NRA I would like to point out the political IRS audits they went through during the Clinton administration. The IRS audits of Clinton enemies is one of the abuses of power that Clinton was impeached for, but the left wing media says it was for Monica (which only came out during the impeachment hearings). If the Clintons hated the NRA that much, they must be doing something right.

thanks for all the replies both pro/con. I'm new so any information i can get the better..keep em coming as i will be reading them. i still havent recieved the membership info packet, so any one with advice/news with events/activites open to members that take/will take place in Houston/Austin area are welcomed. thanks again y'all.;)
