hello,
i just bought a sks for $30.00 off a guy, this sks is a chinese gun it has 3 chinese letters on it and that is all, it has no markings of any importer on it nowhere, it has at least a 30 round mag in it and it has been painted black, but underneath it it is a shiny orange red probaly the original color, does anyone have any idea about what type this is and how it does not have markings on it,
thanks,
jon

Why am I getting this funny "hair standing on the back of my neck" feeling?

Must be something in the air because mine is doing the same thing.

Check for a serial number and make double sure you got a gun from a reliable source. If the gun has neither then I would suggest getting rid of it like maybe dropping it off at the local PD and giving them the story. It's not worth the potential hassal for $30.00

My feeling is along the lines of C and Mike. If there isn't a serial number(My Chinese Norinco has the serial on the left side of the receiver) I'd try to dump it. In fact, I'd probably dump it anyways. Give it to the police, plug the barrel with cement and chunk it in the river, anything. Sounds like it could be trouble, especially for thirty bucks.

On this, we can all agree. It's best to look for a serial number first. Might be a Vietnam bringback or a smuggled gun. Might be a legit gun. Might have a serial number hiding somewhere. Take it to the police department and explain what happened.

everyone calm down, lol, it has the serial number on it on the reciver, i was just wondering if it could be a vet bringback and how can i know what year it was made in,
thanks,
jon

Sounds like a standard fare Norinco SKS with an aftermarket magazine and possibly a painted jungle stock. Is the stock fiberglass or wood?.

Why was he selling it for only $30? Is it broken? In good shape, these things go for $150-$200. Even in the condition you describe it's worth about $100 if it works.

If it were an illegal weapon I'd dump it before relying on the bozos at the local PDs. They usually know less about a weapon than anyone else. Of course I'd strip every usable part from it first! :D

But since you aren't dumping it I'd still be a bit skeptical about it. $30 is a heck of a deal. Maybe too nice of a deal unless you really know and trust the guy.

Anyway..good luck on the SKS search. They can be notoriously hard to track down, especially without an importer marking.

Good Shooting

Ok, that made it sound as if the characters were the only ones on the gun.

As for the importer's mark, sometimes these are VERY lightly done, and if the gun was painted black after it was imported it could have covered up the marking.

I'm not real familiar with SKS's (though I plan to get one when my C&R comes through), but I checked out the page that glocksman posted, and the Chinese characters. I speak and read some Chinese. For your information, the markings with three characters (for example, in the picture marked "China 1964") say "Type 56" and the marking with two characters (in the "Security Forces" pictures) say "security."

It could be a stolen gun. Worse it could be a stolen gun used in a crime. Your local PD could run the serial # to see if it's reported stolen. If a LEO stops you and runs the serial # and it comes back stolen you are in big trouble.

dmk:
yes the stock is fiberglass but has been painted black, all the metal still has all the blue on it, i bought 4 guns off of him so i just said it was 30.00 a gun but yes it works looks pretty good and shoots:

others:
i dont think it was in a crime because he is a pretty known guy and just got rid of all his guns because he neeed money so i bought all of the and it comes out to about 30.00 a gun, but it looks pretty good and shhots i may take all the black paint off and leave it the factory colr and it is a fiberglass stock,
thanks,
jon

Weird SKS

Haven't you ever heard the quote: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. A whole "collection" for $30 each?
A whole collection of what? Raven Semi's and Ivers Johnson revolvers with that single SKS thrown in? If so, then you got ripped.
If it was much better than that, lay low till the heat wears off.
