I posted this over at Survivor's SKS Boards as well...

I picked up a Chinese SKS at the gun shop today, serial number 1605XXX, which indicates that it was produced in 1972. It has the three Chinese characters on the left side of the receiver, along with the numbers 1-5-6 in a triangle. It is also stamped with the letter 'P'. The serial numbers match everywhere I could find one (stock, receiver, magazine housing, trigger group, bolt). There is a star engraved on the right side of the buttstock, and also the letter 'B' on the grip. I couldn't figure out what type of SKS it is (PLA, Non-PLA, etc.) Not that it matters much, I'm just curious.

The bayonet lug has been ground down, I assume to make it legal for importation. Obviously, it doesn't have a bayonet  It has a stamped trigger group. It didn't come with any accessories (no cleaning kit, sling, etc.) but it does have a muzzle break installed from a previous owner. :p

It was completely free of cosmoline; the gun shop cleaned it up pretty well before selling. The bore is extremely bright (with the chrome and all...) and the rifling is sharp. The stock is in decent condition with the exception of a few minor nicks and dings.

I was wondering about the rail mounted on the left of the reveiver all the way to the rear. I would imagine it is for a scope mount, but even after reading the scope sticky in the Chinese section of Survivor's SKS Boards I couldn't figure out how I would go about putting a scope on here. Will AK-47 mounts fit the rail? It does appear to be dovetailed.

Thanks a lot! Oh, it cost me $129. Pretty good deal?

Where did you get your information on the serial number? Your rifle looks like a Norinco. I have seen several Viet Nam War bring backs but none look like your rifle. The fact that it has a scope rail on the left side leads me to believe more that it is a later import. Look for markings just behind the front sight on either side anything stamped or engraved there?. For the money you did just fine.

You're right, it is a Norinco. I got the information about the serial number form another forum but apparently it doesn't apply to my rifle's serial number. It's obviously a later import (bayonet lug ground off, etc.). Forgot to mention that on the right side of the receiver it's stamped "SKS 7.62X39 MADE IN CHINA BY NORINCO KSI POMONA CA." Duh.

The barrel has no markings on it whatsoever.

That was a great price on that SKS. Your not hurt.
I wish I had bought a bunch when they were everywhere. A buddy owned a pawn shop and had so many he wouldn't take anymore in.

Good deal on the SKS. About your side rail. Check kalinkaoptics.com for scopes. They have a good assortment and good prices. Good quality Russian made units too. I have several of their scopes and a Kobra sight on my AK-47. They've been outstanding units.
