I wouldn't think it would be easy to mix up Red-Dot for something else. It's the only powder with little red flecks in it, right?

Maybe it's just worn out brass. Sounds like a hummer of a load, though.

I am new to reloading with only 330 or so rounds loaded so far. But, is sounds like you still have some of these loads available. Would Lyman (who lists a similar load) not be interested/willing to take that ammo and test it to determine a conclusive reason? Or are there independent labs that will do that?

The perception created by the three reloading manuals I have read (Hornady, Lee, Speer) is that they relish the opportunity to solve this sort of mystery conclusively.

As a newb, I am really curious as to how one determines cause when something like this occurs.

So, this is really buggin me....All the more since it has been indicated that Lyman lists Red Dot in this powder range for this weight but not type of bullet.

So, I called Lyman to see what they would have to say.

The switchboard indicated you should call and ask for Dan in the ballistics lab. The number is 1-800-225-9626. They may or may not be interested in seeing any ammo you have, but Dan would be happy to speak with you about this incident.

Lyman will ask what edition of their manual references the load eagle103 quoted. I don't have a Lyman manual (yet), maybe they all list it. If so, perhaps someone else can jump in with edition, and page number? If not you may want to PM eagle103 to get this info.

red dot and bullseye both have too fast of burn rate to work well at 10mm capacity/pressure. while a properly loaded round may not go over saami max an oops will cause a much higher spike than it will with a slower powder.
I'd suggest you chalk it up to lesson learned and use powders with generally accepted burn rates.10mm love power pistol,800X and Longshot

I want to thank all you guys for the input. I'm still not quite SURE why she blew, but it won't happen again with THAT load. I have broken down all the ammo I had loaded and will NOT use the 'quickie' powders in the 10 any more. Slower powders that fill the cases much better seem to assure this won't happen again.

Again, thanks guys.
