I need a good holster for my Sig p226 that i will be getting. The holster must be Open carry, so OWB, and it must have a retention system on it. Its for armored guard duty. Im not familiar with holsters too much as my state frowns on concealed carry. So, help me out here, what are some good brands/model, try to keep it under 150 please.

On retention. Whats the pros cons of a thumb break vs a locking system on a holster?

Don't we all need a good holster?

If you don't need to worry about concealed, check out the Black Hawk SERPA holsters, if you don't mind "plastic".

Thats what I currently use around my house or anywhere else I don't need to worry about concealment (basically, just around my house.)

I had read a pretty bad review of serpa holsters online. Kinda staying away from them.

Galco seems pretty nice, or blade tech. And Safari land. Those are the three ive looked at so far.

FWIW, I am happy with a Desantis minislide for my Glock 26.
Nice and tight to the body.
Cost me $45 at my local shop OTD

Thumb breaks are sometimes called "suicide straps".

The consensus is if its concealed, no thumb break, if its "open carry" use a retention device of some sort.

Safariland rates high up there for retention holsters in the LEO world. Seems the 6280 is the popular brand for them.

$150 is an excellent price cap, since you can still break into the REALLY good holster makers.

You can check out Milt Sparks, Alessi, Del Fatti, Brommeland, HBE, and other for really great leather holsters. I'm sure you can special order them with a thumb break. These should be still under your $150 price requirements, but they'll be leather you'll be proud of wearing :D

Theres also the generic Galco leather holsters, but I feel that you're not quite getting the quality for the price they demand. Their prices they want are breaking into the "custom" makers territory. But the Galco holsters do work and serve their needs well.

Also check out bladetech, sidearmor, and Comp TAC for your Kydex needs.

Stay away from Uncle Mikes and Fobus for duty work. :)

What do you not like about Fobus? I use one of their paddels for my 1911's.
I have not used it for duty carry though.

What problems have they given you??

May I ask why?

The thumb break became second nature for me in very little time.

I'm not being contrary, just curious. I like having some form of retention and am open to ideas other than the thumb break.

Bianchi makes many different OWB models and are a large supplier of police agencies. Most of my OWB holsters are from them!

I've noticed that gun leather has a lot in common with fishing tackle. The cheap stuff is serviceable, if only under optimal circumstances, and the high-end gear tends to be pretty but doesn't really work any better than the mid-range stuff.
I got a great, serviceable Ted Blocker IWB holster for $83 and the very highly regarded Versa Max II by Milt Sparks will run you about $95 before you add bells and whistles. With this being known, unless you want some Fancy Dan, bling-with-dubs holster to show your buddies, dropping more than $100 before S&H is wholly unnecessary. And the OWB holsters from these well-known makers are even cheaper than the IWBs I listed.

Just keep this in mind before you buy...
