I have a Valkman 6" fighter in D2 that I purchased to finish. I also purchased a really nice block of stabilized box elder burl. I am now(after 2 years) realizing that I don't have the knowledge, equipment, or testicular fortitude to accomplish this on my own.

Can anyone suggest a good scale maker that I can send these to and get it completed?

Thanks!

That's gonna be tough because I don't know too many makers that would do that for another maker.

Drop Sam a line.

I don't think you need a scale maker.

I think you need a knife maker who can fit and finish the scales for you.
Once the blade is done and hand rubbed, the rest of it isn't very hard to do properly.

I coulda/woulda done it for you if the arthritis hadn't got the best of my hands a few years back.
The shaping, rough sanding, and finish sanding kills me now and I can't do it anymore.

I still have an unfinished knife laying on my bench from several years ago I can no longer do the finish work on.

Are you just scared of ruining your box elder burl? Maybe try practicing on some scrap wood. I wouldn't dissuade you from using someone on the forum to make these for you, but I'd also strongly encourage you to try your hand at making your own. Again, maybe on some scrap wood first, until you are confident in what you're doing. Simple scales are easy to make. I use a Dremel with one of the rubber sanding drums that takes the sand paper cylinders for rough shaping, and then progressively finer sand paper to fine tune and finish. I would strongly suggest having burl wood stabilized first though, if it's not already. It might be fine without it, but I like burl to be stabilized.

If you decide to tackle them yourself, remember to wear a dust mask or respirator when sanding.

Can someone post a pic of the finished blade and scales? I have a step by step tutorial I have posted on how to do this, so you could just follow that. Up to you, but I would like to see some pics if you have them.

I went back to the pics of these knives when I sold them, and this one was finish ground and the handle area sandblasted. Applying the handles and pins is all that needs to be done.

I have had many batches of D2 done by BOS Heat Treat , and recently some CPM D2.

BOS doesn't do high carbon steels that need an oil quench.

I knew that about the oil quenching steels, but for some reason (I don't know why), I thought he didn't do D2. I guess my memory is going downhill.
