Yes I'm new to reloading, and I dont have a Barnes Reload book yet, but its on the way... I'm just curious right now on what spec you guys use for the 62 gr Barnes TSX. I have a 1/8 twist in a heavy barrel AR15. The only powder I have is Hodgman 4895, and I need to put it to use. For the OAL , whats the most reliable in the 223 bolt "commercial"? I know this is alot of questions, and would really appreciate the help. This is my first post, "Im new", but I really like the High Road forum. You guys seem to be on top of your game compared to the other, and atleast not chewing someones ass over a legit question. I live in Rural south Tx, and theres not much for choice unless you buy online or drive a minimum of 100 miles out of Brush Country.

I may be able to answer a few of your questions.

I have loaded 20 rounds of 62 gr TSXs for my AR15. I called Barnes to see what load data they could provide for a Nato 5.56 chamber. They show 23.4 min and 25.4 max with H4895. OAL: 2.240." If you call them they can provide similar data for a "commercial .223" if that is what your rifle is chambered for.

I loaded test loads with 62 TSXs and 26.0-27.0 grs of RE-15. OAL: 2.240" I plan to shoot them tonight, I'll post the results here. It wont be apples to apples but may get you started in the right direction.

Make sure you clean all of the copper fouling out of your barrel before switching to Barnes bullets. Try Sweets.

Per Barnes:
1) Thoroughly clean your barrel with an aggressive copper remover (Barnes CR-10 or Sweets 7.62). Our all-copper Triple Shock X Bullet is made of a softer material than used in conventional jacketed bullets. Be sure to clean any jacket fouling from your barrel before you shoot TSX Bullets. We

I've tried that combination. :)

The three I tried was 23.0, 23.5 and 24.0 grains of powder using:
Rem 7 1/2 primer
Hodgdon H4895 powder
Lake City Brass
Barnes 62 TSX
OAL 2.245

Gun was a 1:9 bull barrel AR-15 with .223 chamber.

I saved the targets.
23.0 gave me 1 3/8" group, 5 shot.
23.5 gave me 1 3/4" group, 5 shots with one called flyer; discounting it the group was 1 1/4.
24.0 gave me a 2" group, 5 shots.

My manual says 22.5-24.5; I had the best luck in the middle.

Thank you a bunch fellas for the data, very cool news. What do y'all think about the TSX for hunting. I've got a young son who's shooting the 223 this year, and very comfortable with it. I think I'm going to let him pop a doe this yr, he's 6

I'm going to deer hunt with my AR. I have no doubt that a 62 tsx will do the job.

I have loaded up some with Varget powder that I hope to try this week; to see if that makes any difference. I am also going to try my other upper; a 1:8 twist with a wylde chamber. I'll let you know.

Good luck!

Dpms AR-15 1/9 16"

Here are the results from last night. I will admit I am not thrilled with the results (see attached). Shot @ 50 yds

I think I will change to a faster burning powder such as H335 or W748.

I have also attached a target for comparison (on of my go to loads).

Hunting with an AR

I have killed doe with my AR. They have all been DRT. As for the larger bucks, I am more confident in my .25-06.

Attached is a picture of the Hog I shot this past saturday with mine.
125 yards with Hornady's 60gr TAPs. Roughly 100 lbs.

Never took a step DRT, just the way I like it.

I would never underestimate the .223 with well placed shots.

Happy Hunting!

I tried out the 62 TSX with 24.5 grains Hodgdon H4895 in my 1:9 twist .223 chamber AR--the results were great! This is Barnes Manual MAX load with this powder; I saw no pressure signs so I'm going to keep this one and use it for deer hunting.

5 shots into 1.0" on a windy day.

P.S. I also tried 3 loadings with Varget and the 62 TSX but it was not as impressive; H4895 is the way to go!
