I need help getting my governor, Chet Culver, motivated to sign SF 2379. This bill would bring “Shall Issue” to Iowa, and make it so that Iowa recognizes all other States’ carry permits.

Please contact Gov. Culver via one or all of the following methods. If he does not sign this bill by April 29, it will be “pocket vetoed” by default.

I need as many people to contact him in support of SF 2379 as possible.

Here are some easy ways to do it.

Iowa Carry’s Legislative Action Center with a prewritten email that all you need to do is send: http://capwiz.com/iowacarry/issues/alert/?alertid=14882486

His facebook wall: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Chet-Culver/6683402181?v=wall

His phone number: 515-281-5211

If you can’t be respectful, don’t do it. Otherwise, I need to get everyone onboard that I can.

Please, help bring “Shall Issue” to Iowa.

You do not need to be an Iowa resident to do this. In addition to making Iowa "shall issue" this bill will make it so Iowa recognizes all other states' permits.

FYI....I found out yesterday Iowa Sheriffs are individually making trips and calls to Culver's office telling him not to sign it.

There are a couple of sheriffs who have posted up on his facebook wall. Thankfully, all thus far have posted in support. Hopefully a couple of them have stopped in or called too.

No one would care about this issue in Iowa if the Sheriffs had been uniformly issuing in the first place. Hopefully the unequal practices of the past will come back to haunt them on this one with enough people contacting the Gov. to finish getting this pushed through.

I have been a supporter of this bill for months, and feel that we really need to push this last week. I recommend EVERYONE contact him, if you are an Iowa resident or not. This bill will cause Iowa to recognize EVERY other states permit to carry, and increase the number of shall issue states overall.

Post on his Facebook wall (just search Chet Culver) or use iowacarry.org's action center to send him a message. It is very important that we don't come all this way for nothing. We cant have gotten this bill through both the house and the senate with 80 percent in favor, only to have our Governor not sign it. :banghead:

This has been settled. Thank you all for your assistance. Thursday at 9 he will sign.
You will all be pleased that I received the following email this afternoon when I booted up the computer:

According to a report published just a very short time ago on Radio Iowa, Governor Culver WILL be signing SF-2379 into law on Thursday, April 29 at 9:00 am. There are no details yet as to the type of signing ceremony that he will hold, but the report says that he will in fact sign the legislation.

The article can be found at http://www.radioiowa.com/2010/04/26/governor-says-hell-sign-gun-permit-bill-into-law/

We will publish more information as we get it.

Thank you to everyone who made the effort to contact the Governor's office to support this legislation.

and this is on the local news website:

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Gov. Chet Culver has told The Associated Press he will sign into law a measure overhauling the way concealed weapon permits are issued.

The governor said he plans to sign the measure on Thursday.

He said he's always been a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, which protects the right to keep and bear arms. Culver also said telephone calls and e-mails to his office have run heavily in favor of the measure.

Currently, those seeking a permit to carry a concealed weapon must apply with their local sheriff, who has broad discretion to make the decision about whether to grant the permit.

The new law would require sheriffs to issue permits to applicants who meet a set standard and allows sheriffs to deny an application only for a specific set of reasons.

Thank you all for your help!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't he also say that he would sign it when it got to him - and then he sat on it? (And is still sitting on it actually.)

Actually, he said nothing on the front end, although there has been quite a bit of gun counter rumor spread that said he had. I have yet to see anything documented of him being either for or against the bill prior to today's news releases and posts on his website, and I have looked extensively.

A few weeks ago, the guys behind the counter at Sportsman's Warehouse in Ankeny were even telling some customers he's already signed it. My guess is you can see how this would happen.

Regardless, I am content that he will follow through and have sent my thanks. If things go otherwise it is out of my control now anyway. I will reassess if for some odd reason he cancels the 9AM Thursday signing he currently has scheduled.

Thanks yammerscooner, I've been trying to get people to contact Governor Culver for weeks now ever since the bill passed the legislature (and weeks before that contacting my Senator and Congressman). I actually sent him two messages through the Governor's website. Thanks for the update. This is excellent news, my wife will probably be happy to hear it as well so I don't have to keep going on about it.

I lived in one of those "red" may issue counties for three years. I fought hard for a permit and it had some crazy restrictions. I will be most pleased to see this development. Good folks over at IowaCarry!
