I want a 1911 for around $450, I was thinking of the SA mil-spec. Im looking for something for defense and good for the range.Im looking for what everyone else wants good quality for my buck. What would you recommend?

Add a few bucks and go for the NRM Colt. You said you want quality for your bucks.
Remember that you get what you pay for. Look for low the prices and you will find the lower quality.

Majic (not me, the other majic  ) gives good advice.

For a little more, the NRM Colt is a great 1911. The SA Milspec is a great gun, but the Colt is better. Fit, finish blah blah.

All I can say is take a look at both. The Colt is worth the difference in $$.

Take a look at the new Springfield GI 1911 you can usually find them around $389.00 . They are a bargain and the fit and finish is super. Use as is or as a base gun for a custom build.:)

1911 around 450.00

I too was in the same place that you are not too long ago (last month to be exact)...

I was looking for a 1911 for under 500.00 that would be good for both range and defense.

After doing months of research, I had my choices down to two firearms:

SA Mil-Spec 1911 (Stainless) 499.99 (Blued) 454.00
Dan Wesson PM3 1911 445.00

Both are great guns, however for the features and function I went with the Dan Wesson. It has everything that I was looking for in a 1911 and the attention to detail can not be beat.

Read more about it here :

As for the Colt, I will not get into it, I will just say that I found that the two guns I listed above were better for both price and function.

However, I do not think that you would be completely wrong if you went with any of them.

Here is a picture (From www.danwessonfirearms.com) of what I got NIB for 445.00:

Add me in the NRM Colt club too...

My 1991A1 NRM Commander has been flawless after about 400 rounds or so now. Brown bag your lunch for a few weeks and get the Colt, I don't think you'll regret it. Very nicely finished, accurate, reliable, and perhaps it's just me, but I really like the asthetics of the new rollmarks.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the choices that were mentioned so far. I had a SA GI Mill Spec, it was reliable and very very accurate. It just needed a trigger job out of the box. I got rid of the SA because I bought the NRM colt, and the blueing on the colt left much to be desired on the SA (Probally not the best reason to sell a gun, but it is still at my local range for me to shoot now and then). The colt is very very accurate and reliable also.
As far as the Dan Wesson, I have not owned one yet ( I have one in 9mm on order) , but have looked at and shot a few at the range, and they all have been excellent guns also.
So I guess I would tell you to get the one that feels best in your hand, and jumps out at your eyes.

Have had great luck with my Springfield GI. They run around $400 so you will have a few bucks left over to get some practice ammo.

1911

Thankyou everyone I'm going to the shop and will get a feel for the Nrm Colt , and the PM3. I wish I was 21 that way I could rent them and get a better feel, thank God my pops is progun or I wouldnt even be able to get it new.

zahc...

being under 21 means still having a birthday to look forward to.

After 21, there's no more 16 yrs old to drive, 18 to buy cigarettes, rifles, shotguns and porn, 21 to legally drink and buy a handgun... after that you jus' wish you were younger.

You still have the chance to look forward to that first handgun for your 21st birthday. That's the best feeling :)

Man, I jus' sounded like an old fart there...

Nope, you are still a yungun. Cause gittin to be an old fart means you know there is social security to look forward to. :D

I own 2 SA Mill-specs and couldn't be happier with them. The first one I bought several years ago and the second one I bought last year I gave $419 for it.

NRM= New Roll Mark. Colt changed the markings on the slide as the preceding markings were disliked by almost everyone.

kimber

I have an offer for a used Kimber custom 2 with night sights for $580. Does that sound decent? Its in great condition, very few rounds put through it.

Darkside, you went from $450 to $580. Since you aren't 21 yet take your time and shop around. You will find plenty of deals, but first you need to decide just what you really want. There's no need to rush. Try this site and read what people have to say about all the various 1911 pistols on the market:

They also replaced the plastic trigger with an aluminum one, went from a very coarse finish a nicer blue job with better polish, replaced the plastic grips on the blued models with rosewood, modified the barrel throat for better feeding, and improved the overall quality.

But they kept the same model numbers (O1991) as the old guns, so people call the new guns New Roll Mark or NRM O1991's

1911

I called up my buddie the other day he is a 1911 fanatic. He brought some milspec and his Kimber custom. So today I have put my down payment on the Kimber custom II, it just feels right to me when shooting. When I get my tax return I will be hitting the range soon after to enjoy my Kimber.

Thank you all for your help.
Jeff

I'm sorry, but your well intentioned suggestion to 'just take it' does not make me feel any better.:(

Black Majik,

... after that you jus' wish you were younger.

Not so. There's still your thirtieth birthday to look forward to, after which you can smoke cigars in public without looking like a dork, and can comment on politics and the economy at parties without folks muttering "What does that kid think he's talking about?" ;) :D
