Ok, so I have my Dillon 650 set up and running great. After getting to know how the machine works everything seems to be working.....till now. I have ran about 1200 rounds through it and on occasion I would get a sideway or an upside down primer. One in every 100 or so. Well I set out to run 500 after I found a nice IDPA load. I blew the machine out with canned air to remove any powder, filled the primer tube and started running it. Damn, 2 sideways primers in a row.
I noticed the shell plate did not line-up straight with the primer magazine. It looks like the edge of the primer is nicking the side of the shell plate on the way up and getting stuck sideways. I stopped everything, took the shellplate off and removed the primers. Everything is very clean but I cleaned it again.
I re-assembled it and cycled the machine by the lever, manually indexing the shellplate, primer magazine and the primer assembly still does not line-up.
I don't see any way of adjusting it. The shell plate indexes via a divet for the metal ball and the primer assembly does the same.

After I assembled everything I ran 200 rounds and got 13 sideways and 3 up-side primers. This sucks, I am sure I am doing something wrong. Thanks for your help, Sammy

You need a index alignment tool, its a short rod about 1" long with a cavity on one end that fits a small primer and the other end fits the large primer. The drill is to push the handle forward, as if to seat a primer, meanwhile loosen the two allen screws that hold the ....first, do you have a alignment tool?

Loosen the two priming system bolts and adjust it so the shell holder and primer disk are centered with each other. If you can’t get it lined up with your eye, give Dillon a call and they will send you an alignment tool (I never needed it). Then make sure the locator tab at station two is adjusted with .010 clearance between it and the case.

I guess you just went off line, the index cam has been relaced with a taller one, the old index cam measures 1.655" the new one measures 1.775, you might check the heigth first to see which is installed on your 650.

You will need the alignment tool also, so if you don't have it, a quick call to Dillon will get one on the way pronto, along with the tool will be detailed intrructions on setting the index correctly.

I fought that same battle, but a few ajustments will get you rolling again without all the hassles.

Had that happen once

In my case the shell plate was too tight to begin with. A primer got sideways and hung up between the primer wheel and the top of the primer wheel cover.

XRing44 - Thanks for the tip on alignment tool. Is that a Dillon accessory or home made please?

1st, how are you loading the primer tubes? If you're using a vibraprime or some other time saving primer tube filler, you could be getting some in the tubes upside down.

2nd, the primer punch should not come anywhere near the shell plate. If it's hitting the shell plate, there's something wrong with the detent under the shell plate.

3rd, the primer plate must move smoothly to deliver primers to the primer punch. This means a steady motion to the whole machine. With mine, I noticed some of the same symptoms. I tracked it down to the primer plate itself. It had some minor burrs on the entrance into the holes that hold the primers. I tossed both plates into my vibratory tumbler with some shells I was cleaning. It polished the burrs enough to make the difference. If I had my dremel tool at that time, I would have used a felt fob and some rouge to smooth up the holes.

4th the little lever that positions the shell at the powder/priming station HAS to be adjusted just right. Too tight, it can push the base of the shell too far into the shell plate. To loose, it allows the shell to come too far out of the slot in the shell plate. NOT having that lever adjusted right can cause the primer to hook on the edge of the primer pocket, flipping it sideways, possibly even upside down.

Those are my guesses, others may have other ideas.

Its a dillon product, and in my opinion, it should be included with every XL650 that leaves the shop.

I'm also interested in others advice on positioning the shell plate in line with the primer seater without the tool. I'm an old dog that still loves to learn a new trick.

Hope this helps.

Darn it, I'm gonna stop answering these new posts. Before I get a reply typed, four others have already replied with the correct info. At least now I know there's such a thing as an alignment tool. I'll hafta order one when I call dillon the next time.

You guys rock. Thanks, I don't think I have the tool to get it allighned but I will check. Thanks again, I will report back when I get it sorted out. :p

Idon't have the tool but I found the 2 screws below the shell plate were loose. Everything looks good and straight when I tightened them up. Thanks again, I am going to run some ammo later and I will repotrt back. Thanks, Sammy

Sammy, that may indeed fix it this time, but my advice is to order the index tool, mine seem to do great for a few thousand rounds, then either because of operator error or something wearing, moveing, etc. I start getting the occasional sideways primer, I stop and in minutes, I'm up and running again with zero problems. Thats just my experience with the XL650s, others may have a different opinion.

I tightened the 2 hex screws blow the shell plate and it works great. Just ran 100 perfect loads. Thanks again, Sammy
