i can't find it anywhere in my books, but a friend of mine at work has a shotgun from his grandfather, that know ones ever heard of. he says it has the word RANGER on the barrel in scripted letters, it's a side-by-side in 20ga. and it's in 90% condition. he says his papaw bought it used in the thirtys. he'll never part with it but he would like to know more about it. so far this is all he can remember about the gun, but i told him to gently field strip it for more info. any help will be greatly appriciated

well that sure would fit the bill but he said it was written in script or cersive, this may be a different grade of what he has? one thing i forgot was the patten date is 1912. thanks for the heads up i'll pass this info along.

Most of the Ranger doubles were built by Stevens. As with all old shotguns, a trip to Mr Gunsmith is in order.

Stevens shotguns were perfectly serviceable and still work. Enjoy....

There are all sorts of guns out there with Ranger on them. Pics would help narrow it down. For instance,

"Ranger: b) Trade name used by Eastern Arms Company on various firearms made forSears And Robuck and Co of Chicago.
Ranger: c) Trade name of the Sears, Roebuck and Company of Chicago on a widevariety of firearms marketed by that firm."

From what I've read, I think Sears put Ranger on shotguns from '26 to '42. They quit selling firearms in 1980 FWIW.

thanks for the info people, i'll post more when i find something out about the gun. thanks again.

Ranger semi-auto

I have an old semi-auto 12ga shotgun from my great-grandfather (that he got in the mid-late 1930’s according to my grandfather) that says ‘Ranger’ on the receiver. It appears to be a clone of the Browning A-5 with a 30 in. barrel & fixed modified choke. I know it doesn’t have too many markings on this gun, but I will check again when I get home. I’ve heard that he may have gotten it at Sears as JohnBT has mentioned in an earlier post, but if anyone knows more I sure would appreciate it!

It shows wear on the stock and the bluing has mostly worn off, but I’ve personally used it for hunting for over 10 years and put 90 rounds through it this past weekend.

Almost certainly it's a Savage. Good shotgun, like its Remington and Browning cousins. Produced under license.

Bad News....

Parts may be iffy.

Good News......

They hardly ever need them.

As with all old shotguns, take them to Mr Gunsmith.

I know that this is an old thread but I took apart my old 'Ranger' (Auto-5 clone) and noticed that the bronze friction piece looks like it has started to become beveled on the non-beveled side. I don't remember how the rings were set up when I took them off, but could this happen due to incorrectly placing the rings? It this OK or will it eventually cause the gun to start jamming?

Also, if I need to (or just want to have extra parts) will the replacement parts that are designed for the Browning A-5 (such as from this sight http://www.gun-parts.com/browning/ ) work or is there slight differences? Thanks!

My dad has his fathers old ranger 410 bolt shotgun. After some quick research I discovered it was a stevens. Sears sold many quality guns under their own brand name. Same guns built on the same line as winchester or stevens or remington.
