I have a walnut stock that has a LOP 14" I would like to remove 1/2 but I do not want to refinish the complete stock.
I have done this before but I also redid the complete stock and adding a better quality recoil pad compared to factory pads.
I like to here a few idea in cutting the stock with out major overall refinishing the stock
I used hacksaws chop box with fine tooth blades also tape the wood before cutting but I am open for any other home ideas.I have no problem in regrinding the new recoil pads to fit

If you have a bandsaw make a fixture to hald the stock level and secure so it does not move when cut.
Tape it like you have done and cut slowly.
You can use a belt sander to flaten the cut, than add the pad and shape it.

Fastest way to cut is tape up stock, and then block it into a chop saw with a jig to hold position for correct angle and length of cut and cut away. Either that or a large radial arm saw. Use a new or known good blade that cuts true and you should not have a problem.

Fastest might not be the best though, there is a great deal of chipping that happens with a chop saw good blade or not.
Good tape will help like 3-M 2 inch masking take, don't skimp on tape for this.
The 3-M 2 inch is the strongest masking tape out there which means you don't have to work up a pile of it which will throw off your cut angle.
