I have shot 1911s, many different Sigs (still my favorite, 226), Berettas,SWs, Rugers, etc. The Glock has always escaped me when I went to the range, until the other day.

One of my friends who is a police officer bought a Glock 19 as his duty weapon and after a trip home I was able to take it to the local range for a try out. Along with his 19, we brought his brand new Sig 229. Heres what I liked and didnt like. I didnt really think I would ever like the Glock, but after shooting it my mind changed.

The Pros.

1. Light weight weapon and balance- for some reason I always thought I would hate the plastic frame, but I actually liked how the gun balanced in my hand. Still love my Sigs, but actually liked the plastic frame. Amazing.

2. Concealed carry- this gun is perfect for me to carry all day long. I liked the sig 229, but the Glock 19 wins out in this department.

3. I thought it was pretty accurate sidearm.

The Cons

1. the finger grips rubbed me the wrong way, after away they annoyed me. Now I see why people send them off to get shaved off. The worst part was right under the trigger guard where it meets the grip

2. Mag release, I would get an aftermarket release.

I plan on getting one in the near future, I just hope it gets along with my Sig 226.

The G19 makes for a fine shooter & carry gun. Sure there are others out there that cost more, work better & most certainly look better but that thing will go bang everytime you pull the trigger & put rounds right where you want them. That's why I have one :D

thanks for the report. The G19 is on my shortlist for a new IPDA/HD/Carry gun along with the XD and M&P.
I plan to try one out at the range later today.

I'm not a huge Glock fan. That being said I own a 32 in .357SIG and have a .40 barrel for it as well. You really can't go wrong with a Glock. It really comes down to personal taste in the end. If you're a collector you should probably have one in your collection. If you just liked the way it operated, you may want to take a look at Kahr's and Springfield XD's before buying one. Both have more or less the same operation as a Glock but slightly different ergonomics. You may decide on the Glock in the end or find one of the others is a better fit for you. You should also try the 26 I think it is, which is the even smaller version of the 19. I personally find the Kahr with it's single stack frame fits my hands better than a Glock. I also don't like the setup of the finger grooves on the current Glocks, my Glock is actually the old model without the finger grooves. You might want to try and find an older 19 as well if they came that way and try one of those.

I much prefer the non groove grip on my second generation Glock 19 over the finger grooves on my 26s and Model 34.

As much as I like my 3rd gen g17, I still prefer the 1st gen model I've had since the late 80's where the finger grooves are concerned.

Just had the glockdoctor completely tear the 1st gen apart for the first time [ it has 65K+ through it ], and he was pretty amazed at how filthy and carboned up the internals were and it still ran flawlessly.

Had the new High Vis with Tritium sights installed, thorough cleaning and left the stock parts it came with internally. He didn't see any wear on the mag release, nor the extractor. I'd not worry too much about that mag release failing in any way for lots of years to come.

Glocks, pretty amazing guns to my thinking. The first gen is relegated to students use now, and I carry the 3rd gen most of the time until the weather gets to being over 100 out here, then I swap out for the g26.

I just got back from the range, getting acquainted with my new carry weapon... A Glock 33. FWIW, I'm a SIG guy through and through... but the more I shoot this Glock, the more I like it...

Once you've got the bug, it's all over... The only thing left to do is buy one. :D

Just picked up a g19 yesterday. What I read on this forum helped me to decide against a mouse gun and go for reliable. Carried a Snub .38 for a while,
8 years or so, and the G19 upgrade is a welcome thing all the way around.

Had an old knock off p-19, and once even had a firestar, but they both sucked for carry, and the p19 didn't like anything but FMJ. Firestars weigh like, 3 lbs, if I remember correctly. At least, they carried like they were.

GLOCK ergos are the best for me. Point and shoot in a panic situation is the winning point. Less moving parts than the Springfield, although I like it. Too much to go wrong.

Why GLOCKS are so popular with the serious pros. Functional, reliable, easy to maintain, and even easier to operate. And for the price, you get the gun, spare mag, cleaning kit, and a decent gun case plus a lock. More bang for the buck, per se.

Not one failure in over 100 rounds yesterday at the range. Waiting for the middle of next week to get a few more boxes and qualify it for W carry. Also have a galco IWB rig coming in for it. Hopefully that should take care of everything. Still have the snubbie too.

Although I've shot various Glocks owned by friends through the years, I never felt the need to own one.

I love the grip, size and sleekness of my 1911 autos, and love my S&W revolvers most of all.

The Glocks didn't have the smooth, crisp single action pull of a 1911 . . . nor the smooth double action pull of my revolvers.

Additionally, the butt ugly plastic guns with their dull black, chunky square slides left me also unimpressed.

All they had going for them was lots of rounds, rock solid reliability and decent accuracy . . . all very important points, of course, in the Glock's well-earned defense!

Recently, I told one of my sons that I'd probably never own a Glock, for one never made it into my top five on any buying list priority I'd ever had.

TWO DAYS AGO . . . I went into a local gun shop with some Christmas money, looking for a fine, used Smith revolver such as an airweight J-frame, or a 4" .45ACP M625, etc.

Instead, I noticed a nearly new Glock 23 in .40 Short & Wimpy, at a really great price . . . the best deal in the place.

YESTERDAY . . . I returned and purchased it after negotiating an even better price. It was a civilian model, nearly new and surely hardly ever used before the trade. All materials, box and accessories were there. I only added a new high cap mag. to the purchase.

IMPRESSIONS UPON SHOOTING IT . . .

1. Fine accuracy
2. Typical Glock trigger for decent rapid shooting
3. Good grip . . . but a chunky plastic frame and a sharp edge on the lower front edge of the mag release aggrevated my trigger finger (I'm left handed).

I shot my 1911 and several of my revolvers a little better, and love the feel of well polished, smooth metal vs. cast plastic.

THE VERDICT?

So . . . I'm gonna give it to my oldest son I believe. He's been dreaming of a Glock .40 for years. I think he'll get more use out of it than I . . . and he'll be getting one heck of a gun.

A great, late Christmas present indeed!

Well...Duh!

I have had only one failure in over 7000 rounds through my Glock 19 (about 95% of that has been CCI Blazer Aluminum, the cheapest crap money can buy). I'm pretty sure I limp wristed it.

No levers, no decockers, no external safetys, no jimcracks, gee-gaws or doo-dads. Just pull the trigger and it goes bang. First time, everytime, all the time.

Can you tell I like 'em.

Good for you, Glock's are great guns.

I don't understand the utter hatred for them by some people, but to each his own.

You've tried it and realized that you liked it, I just wish everybody would try a gun before bad mouthing them.

I've owned and tried dang near every production gun available(really) and have now come full circle back to Glock.

I have always been a 1911 fan, but for the last 13yrs i have carried a Glock-17(the same one in fact) and it has gone bang every time.

I now own a G-29 and love it, plus i can put a .357sig or .40S&W barrel in it :D

I have been very pleased with my Glock 19. After struggling to shoot well (to my personal standards;)) with DA/SA autos and DA revolvers, I promptly started blowing the center out of my targets with it. Its balance, trigger action and low muzzle flip make this easy.

It was not perfect out of the box. It did function perfectly with FMJ bullets but would fail to feed the last round of a hollowpoint, jamming the nose into the bottom of the feed ramp and often "telescoping" the bullet into the case. This was due to faulty magazine followers. After many, many rounds through it I broke it - the slide lock (the serrated tabs you pull down to release the slide from the frame) spring broke, causing the slide to fly off the frame into the dirt.

It does have some minor shortcomings, some of which are subjective and may not apply to you. The grip, while allowing a perfect reach to the trigger, is somewhat "blocky" feeling. Its angle causes the gun to point high until you have worked with it for a long time. The sight picture is relatively poor. The magazine release could be a little easier to operate. The magazines, with plastic overlaying an inner metal liner, could be slimmer (thereby making the grip even slimmer), sometimes don't drop free cleanly due to the rough surface, and are not easy to break down for cleaning. I had to look pretty hard to find all these nitpicks, though. ;)

The new S&W M&P addresses and corrects all the nitpicks. The full-size is about the same size as the G17, and the compact (my choice) splits the difference between the G26 and G19. It's not going to replace my G19 any time soon, however.

" . . . but a chunky plastic frame and a sharp edge on the lower front edge of the mag release aggrevated my trigger finger (I'm left handed)."

I'm a lefty, too, and shoot my G19 in competition. I gently rounded the corners on the mag release, and have never looked back.:)

After shooting my Brothers G17, the thing grew on me. At first I didn't care for it, but after a few hundred rounds, Well, my G19 will be here in a few weeks:D

I was always lukewarm about my G27

Till I sent it off to have a grip reduction and the trigger guard rounded out. I also had a $25 trigger polish. All I have to say now is WOW, what a gun. The only thing I want to change now are the sights. I want some 3 dot tritium sights and a bigger slide release.
