Checked out 5 guns at a gun store: SIG 226, 228, Glock 19, G-17 and Kahr K-9.

I have been thinking of getting another full size high quality modern 9mm pistol since I like shooting my Beretta 92FS so much. I checked out the above pistolas at a local gun store and had a chance to see side by side what they felt like. I have picked up SIG 226s before but never right along side another gun for comparison.

Between the Glock 19 and the Glock 17 the 19 felt like a much better balanced gun, there was nothing extra to get in the way and make the gun feel too long or too heavy. It does have a chunky grip but so do all Glocks. It points great and sits low in the hand.

The SIG 226 felt better than the 228 for some reason. It is larger but balanced well. I have noticed this same thing when I held a SIG 245 and 220. I had the 220 and it felt better than the 245 by far. Both SIGs felt larger than they were and sat so high in the hand they felt like they were not part of my hand. As much as I like SIGs for the quality and accuracy, they have a way to go to catch up to the more modern and better designed guns like Glock and Kahr in terms of grip angle and bore axis. The SIG controls are the best on the market, DA/SA with no safety and a de-cocker is the best config for a defensive pistol IMO. Too bad SIG can't trim some fat on the grip and lower the bore axis and give it a more Glock like grip angle but keep all else the same. That would make the best handgun out there!

I also checked out a Kahr K-9 in the case because I had one before and never got over letting it go. When I picked it up, I knew I was going to buy it. No gun has ever felt as close to perfect as the Kahr feels in my hands. It is like it was made for me. I was really looking for a full sized 9mm like the SIG 226, CZ-75 or Glock 19 but it was a good price on the Kahr and I have been looking to replace my E-9 that I traded a few years ago. The K-9 is a better gun because it is all SS and has a dovetailed steel front sight instead of a plastic press fit job like the E-9. The E-9 is a fine pistol but the K-9 is a little nicer for CCW because of the all SS. My E-9 was SS on the grip and black on the slide, I have seen them the other way around also. My slide would rust after a single day in the waistband.

The Glock 19 is on my list if the AWB sunsets. I am NOT going to pay $100 for a hi-cap and I am not going to carry a big fat Glock with only 10rds. Glocks are plastic which makes them feel like junk but they have so much else going for them that I think I can overlook it. I had a Glock 21 that was way too large for me.

personally of all the guns you mentioned, I would pick the P226.....all of the LEO's I have spoken to really like this handgun if it is their duty gun...

But if it doesnt fit his hand well and he feels uncomfortable with it, being the greatest gun in the world doesnt mean anything.

I like the Glock 19 for the exact same reasons you mentioned. Now I will have to try out the Kahr since it sounds like we have the same feel when it comes to handguns. Thanks.:)

It really goes to show that there is no perfect gun for everyone. A SIG 226 may fit one person like a glove but the next guy may find a Glock or a Beretta perfect. I am really picky I guess because there are more guns out there that don't feel good then do feel good for me.

Guns that don't work for me include some of the best guns made but they feel wronge in my hand for various reasons. SIGs, Rugers (except P-95), S&Ws, Walther P-99, all Glocks (except G-19 and G-23), CZs (too long of trigger reach), and other good guns just don't work for me.

Guns that do seem to work include: Kahrs, Berettas, Browning High Powers, Glock 19, 1911s, Stars, and Bersas. Good thing they make many different style and sizes to choose from because there really is no one gun that works for everyone.

the best feeling handguns I own are not on his list......my CZ P01, Dan Wesson Pointman Major, and my Witness 10MM compact are the best feeling guns I own and have shot......my G26 does not fit my hand at all and will probably get rid of it......

Another vote to check out a CZ. It fits me like no other and it's the only brand I've found myself wanting more than 1 of. I started with a CZ 40B but didn't like it's straight grip so I replaced it with a CZ 75B in 9mm and now I'm hooked.

I just picked up a CZ 85 Compact and I love it. I got a RAMI in .40 at the same time. Once we finally get CCW here in KS I'm all set for a carry rig and BUG. :D For another full-size I'd like to get a .40 S&W 75B SA model and the CZ 97B .45 ACP. Oh, and the SP-01 when it comes out. Oh, and the 75 Champion for fun. Oh, and the 75 Standard . . . hmmm . . . if they come out with any 10mm I'll have to get those too . . . Man, I need get more overtime

Definitely go with the one that talks to you. I thought the K-9 was made just for my hand also, and really regret selling it. I have a TT 239-9 that is wider in the slide and not nearly as good in my hand. Maybe I should trade up?

Only you know what fits your hand the best. This is why I don't tell people anymore that one gun is better than another. I used to tell people that certain guns were better because they fit MY hand better but then I realized that what works for me may not work for others. If a Glock feels like a brick in your hand then don't buy one and don't worry about it. There are a bunch of good, reliable guns out there and I think there is a gun to fit most anyone. Will I ever find the perfect gun? I doubt it. If I could have a gun custom made to my hand with every feature I wanted, it still would not be perfect because a handgun is a bunch of trade offs. If it is big enough to shoot well, it is too large for CCW. If it is heavy enough to soak up recoil, it is too heavy for carry. If it holds enough rounds, the grip is too fat. If it is rugged enough for CCW, it lacks adjustable sights or orther refinments that would ad in shooting. One big series of trade off and we have to make our choice based on what we want and value in a gun. For me, the Kahr K-9 is one of those guns that can do anything well but isn't specilized enough to to do anything 100%. Since I want a gun to do several things well, it is a good trade off for me in a lot of cases.

I wish it was a few ounces lighter. I wish it had a trigger that was a little futher out. I wish it held 15 rds. I wish it had double strike capability. Etc.

Modern?
The Glock grip angle is Luger-like, and the Kahr has a Browning HiPower feel to me.

Anyway,
I absolutely agree with you on the Glock 17 vs 19. I always thought the "middle-sized" Glocks felt best- 19,23,32. I think the hump on the backstrap is in a slightly different spot, and that makes all the difference to me. For some reason, the 23 doesn't feel quite as good as the 19. Maybe the bigger hole in the barrel throws the balance off for me, I don't know.
The only Glock I still own is a 19. I had some breakages, and started dumping them, but can't seem to part with the 19. A lot of gun there for the size.

' best feeling gun for me is the Browning High Power and its variants/clones. You oughta try it.

As he chose the Kahr and its grip contours were copied directly from the HP I agree he should try it and he would probably really like it (after a trigger job).

Any of those guns will work just fine. They will all shoot accurately and reliably. You are unable to go wrong with this list.

I agree... I've tried three SIGs now and while all three were absolutely flawless in terms of reliability and more than combat-accurate, I've never experienced one that was truly comfortable in my hands.

And I agree that the Kahrs in general are very ergonomic, at least to my hands. The larger polymer gun, the TP9, is on my short list of guns to try out and/or buy.

If you like Kahrs general feel, you'll probably generally like the feel of HiPowers and CZ75s if you're looking for more of a full-size gun.
