I sure am glad "The High Road" is about construction.

Seems our new Web Team has barred me from viewing some of my favorite sites while at work, not the least of which are about firearms. Glocktalk, Glock-Guns, 1911Forum, etc. are now out of my jurisdiction of browsing. Why? Because of their "Adult" content. I guess I'm not "Adult" enough. I was already barred from most gunbroker type websites, but this is downright dreadful!

Some you guys who complain you can't carry at work shouldn't complain. We can't even carry in Illinois, let alone look at them on the web at work!!!

:(

And you run Lotus Notes too? :barf: :barf:

Your IT guys have a mean streak in them.

You can get around the block if you set up a DNS alias. Do some research on the web and figure out how to do it, then decide whether you want to take the risk.

My first step would be to politely show them that these are not 'bad' sites, and ask them to allow access. They didn't specifically block the site, it was blocked by a software package that has a list of 'adult' sites and for some reason these sites ended up on it. Most companies don't object to people surfing during breaks, lunch, etc. For example, you can probably still access cnn.com, espn.com, etc. They just don't want to get in legal trouble if a co worker were to be offended by someone looking at human porn (gun porn shouldn't count) and then claiming that they were traumitized and that the company didn't do anything to prevent it.

Good Luck

And you run Lotus Notes too?

The company that bought us took us backwards 10 years in terms of IT. They use "Notus Lotes" :barf: and still use a mainframe computer! :what:

Well, at least you ain't using AOL. If you were, you would not be able to view those listed sites even at home!;)

My current employer has a proxy that blocks an awful lot of sites I try to visit. My plan to get around that is to put a Linux box running X in my colo, and then export the display to an X server on my desktop at work... :-D Let 'em try to stop me now!

Yep, we're all engineers for the highway to better understanding of firearms and responsible ownership of same. :)

OK, I concede, and CA is "turn around, bridge out" then.

My company's deafult mail tool is Lotus Notes & Domino servers. Our term for it is "Notus Bloats." There was talk of tar & feathers.

Luckily, our IT folks had mercy on us & set up SMTP & IMAP mail servers, so its Mozilla for me!

I see you have a copy of Programmer's File Editor. A fine replacement text editor. I went emacs a while back, as I can get/compile it on every platform I use: Win2K, RHLinux 6.2, 7.2, 7.3, 8.0, Fedora 1.0, HPUX, Solaris, and Irix. If you like PFE, give ConTex a whirl. You can customize its syntax highlighting to make it a custom editor for more obscure programming/scripting languages.

The computer at work that I am using seems to be doing alot of the same thing.

Cant view auctionarms, gunsamerica, kyimports and a whole bunch more.

Thank God they havent keyed in on THR or gunbroker yet.........yet.

Find out which web filter program they are using... some of the web filters have a website where you can submit sites for reclassification. We use Surfcontrol www.surfcontrol.com if your company uses the same program go to the website and click the "Test a Site" link on the right, type in the url of what is getting blocked and hit test, after the test if the URL is not classified you can add it with a recomended category or you can submit a request for change of categorization. This might be an easy way around the problem you are having as the Surfcontrol people at least update their lists daily and guarantee new site submissions entry into their filter updates within 48 hours.

Our fine federal government lets me take my work computer anywhere I want to go on the internet. However, there is an "asset management agent" program that reads my hard drive in the background to search for any unauthorized programs I may have installed and also monitors my internet use. The only thing banned is the typical porno stuff. 2-dimensional pictures don't bother me anyways.

Fortunately that sort of thing isnt blocked for me, but when I find myself thinking "Do, I really want to follow that link from work? Uh, no." I just remote in to my home system and go out from there. It's a beautiful thing.

Man I pity all of you. No worries about blocked gun porn at my desk. Then again, the company home page itself is gun porn...

Then again, the company home page itself is gun porn...

You wanna drop us a URL?

Where I work now we have a very premative network (couple of routers hooked up to a DSL modem) and there is zero network monitoring ... I'm probably the only one who knows anything about it so I'm pretty secure.

So you guys think MS Exchange is any better then Lotus?

Why use either? I suspect our IT policy-makers went with Notes/Domino because it WASN'T MS Exchange, they could pay big $$$ for every license, and it ran on Windoze.

There are alternatives like sendmail, qmail, postfix, among other server-side apps. Plenty of non-MS mail readers.

I had the same problem from school, which I ultimately gave up on, but I did learn some good things, and found two way's around our filter, Dan Guardian .

First, because they use a transparent proxy, I just re-set the proxy to another one, offsite. That worked for the rest of the semester.

Come next semester, I have a paper on gun control and can't access any useful content. I eventually had an awesome idea, using Internet security to undermine their goal, censorship. It looks something like this:

[Your computer]>/*/*/[content filter]*/*/*/(secure)/*/*/*/[Server one]>-------------(un-secure)---------[server trying to access]

This method works great; and requires NO setting's change to the computer. If anyone is interested in the secure web-proxy I found, PM me for details.

Nick

*Note: Although I can understand the schools legal requirements, I firmly believe that censorship is wrong. We should have the right to view any idea that we wish; it is the responsibility of the individual to take it for what it's worth. I did try to resolve this matter with my school "politically" so to speak, but under "zero-tolerance" they refused to do anything. So I did.

Permanent fix: Get a glamorous job in IT

I know that my Netword Admin won't be blocking sites at my job because, well .... he's me! :neener:

Even if I had to block sites due to sealed orders from above, knowing how to bypass the firewall(for testing purposes of course) is pretty much part of my job description.
