After having my taxes done and discovering I am going to be done by both the State of Oregon and the Infernal Revenue Service. I decided to do the only rational thing one can do in this situation, go to a gun store and window shop. Went to a local out-of-the-way store and found a very interesting gun.
It is a sporterized Czech Mauser rechambered to 8mm-06. Not your typical bubba job. The safety and bolt conversion were done through the gun shop as well as the drilling and scope mounting. The scope is an old school Weaver K2.5?( no power markings) with the post and crosshair recticle. The barrel is original and cut to 23.5 inches. No pitting on the barrel from the original long milsurp stock. Very nice smooth trigger.
The stock is cut down from the original milsurp and hand checkered. Very good work. The finish isn't bad but a little shiny for my taste. Price is only $229.
Thinking real hard about getting this gun. There is some risk with getting a gun chambered for a wildcat. Can't be any worse than getting an old milsurp with an uncertain pedigree. The gun has a long history at this store. The owners of this gun have three other converted milsurps on consignment and they all look pretty good. According to the store owner the gun went to Africa.
I am sure I can round up enough '06 brass to neck up. I already have plenty of 8mm bullets. Somewhere in the archives I have an old issue of Handloader with a article about 8mm-06.
Should be a nice alternative to the Tupperware Special. 8mm-06 is plenty for Elk and other large critters. There is always the option to rechamber to something else if I want to.
The Imperial Red-Headed Scorpio OK'd the buy. She's no help here. She's a big time enabler.
