It's that mythic thing that all knife nuts look for. Some find it in SAKs, some in slipjoints, some in tacticals, some in fixed blades. Well, i think I've found mine.

For those of you who don't know what it is, it's a Kershaw Junkyard Dog. It has 410 stainless steel handles, 4" OAL, 3" blade of 13C26 Sandvik steel. It's made in the USA.

Why do I like it? Let me count the ways;

1. It has a very sharp blade, with a versatile tip profile and a municipality friendly length.

2. It's a good looking knife. Say what you will about the Air Force markings, but I think they look cool.

3. Ergonomics. It fits me very well, even though it's a bit to small for me. That could be solved by purchasing the JYDII, but you lose the friendly blade length.

4. Lock stability. It has a well designed, very strong framelock. Heck, I'd be willing to bet it's as strong as a Delica's lock back, and just a step behind the Mini-Grip.

5. Ease of acess. The flipper works very well and is very aesthetically pleasing. It also functions as a guard

6. Price. It's cheap, at $40. Heck, you can get the partial-serrated version at Cheaper than Dirt for $33. The cheapest Delica is about $50, and the cheapest Mini-Grip is $65. I think the Mini-Grip has 154CM, and the Delica has VG-10. These steels might have slightly better edge holding, but I'd be willing to bet the Sandvik is easy to sharpen. Also, I don't know where either the Mini-Grip or Delica is made, but I'd guess the Delica is a Japanese knife. Now, I have no problem with buying Japanese, but USA is always preferable (with a little Swedish, but not much)

In fact, the only thing I would ask for this knife to have would be a bottle opener.

So, if you're looking for a cheap, good, good-looking folder, consider this Kershaw. It might not be the latest, but in my book, it is the greatest at its price point.

That blade steel is actually one of my favorites. I believe they do make a higher end one with better steel and G10 handles, as well.

Kershaw has a lot of nice designs. My ultimate EDC with slacks is my Leek (G10/S30V). But my second favorite is the Kershaw Spec Bump, and third favorite is Kershaw Avalanche. Those two are my favorites with jeans or shorts. It's just hard to beat the value and functionality of the AO Kershaws.
