Hey all,

I have been thinking about a .22 rifle just to mix up my range shooting. I'm almost deadset on a Ruger 10/22 if I can find a good one used, but I know there have got to be other great choices out there in the 200-300 range.

What do you suggest? My only requirements are semi-auto with decent iron sights (will add a cheap optic later).

Thanks!

I love my 10/22 I have 6 of them all diffrent u can do a lot
With them smith wesen has a good ar 22 I also have the vtr but u have to use a scope with it

If you're planning on heavily modifying the rifle down the road, it's going to be hard to beat the Ruger 10/22.

However, if you're wanting something that's simply accurate and dependable but not the best platform for customizing other than a scope or a different stock, there's the Marlin Model 60 that's probably going to save you some money. It's tube fed, but if that doesn't bother you, they're tons of fun.

I suspect it's pretty hard to find a BAD 22 rifle. I'm sure there are some, but I've never owned one. Some people like one, some the other. Pick one you like and give it a try. If you find you don't like it, sell it and get something else. They're not expensive.

Marlin, Ruger, Remington, Savage, CZ, and I don't know how many others make good ones.

I like Rugers myself.

The 10/22 is the most versatile 22 rifle around. Great platform to start with. It really is a rifle that you never outgrow. Good little rifle right out the box but ss your needs change so can your 10/22.

I agree... The average out of the box Marlin 60 will easily out shoot the average out of the box Ruger 10/22.

I have both and another thing, the Ruger sits in your hand like a beached whale, it's not slim in your hand like the Marlin. That FAT Ruger clip is the reason, and i hate the way the Ruger feels when i carry it.

The three rifles to look at are: Ruger 10/22, Marlin M60 or M695, Remington 597. CZ has come out with a semi-auto, but I don't know anything about it, I would choose the M60 for general purposes and 10/22 for something you might want to customize/improve. Generally the better iron sights will be found on CZ rifles.

If you can pick up a old beater ruger for 125 to 140 bucks with a metal trigger group houseing get it. If it does not shoot as well as you would like a have your barrel recrown and re chamber and some trigger parts from someone like Clark Customs can reduce group size by about half and make for a fun rifle that might still be under 300 dollars.

If you want something that closely mimics the AR-15 I highly recommend the S&W M&P 15-22. Got peep sites and you can mod it in nearly any way you can a real ar-15 including sites and trigger.

If you want a semi-auto, it's hard to beat a Marlin 60 or Ruger 10/22. You could do well with a Savage or Marlin bolt action, though. Lever actions and pumps can be lots of fun, too. Just depends on what floats your boat.
