I want to buy a used .40 cal pistol, and I am new to hand guns- my dad is an avid collector and he was talking to a guy about a S&W sigma. Don't know much about these- are they good, also what would be an affordable way to start?

I wouldn't recommend a Sigma. IMO a Glock in .40 cal is a fine balance of quality and value. Personally, I prefer Sigs but they are a significant bump up in price.

Find yourself a police turn in Glock 22 or 23. I paid $329 for my ex police Glock 22 and it's a fantastic gun. Hard to go wrong with the Glock, they can take a real beating and still shoot good. And since they're ugly when they're brand new the beating the cop gives it doesn't make much difference! Plus most of the wear will be finish wear as most cops don't shoot many rounds through their pistols, and since the Glock frame is black polymer and the slide is tennifered with a black oxide coating over the tennifer there's not much in the way real wear that going in and out of a holster will cause.

There also a truckload of used police S&W 4046s and 4043 for under $300, and a variety of EAA Witnesses for similar prices. Either one can be a good, solid, accurate, serviceable weapon. CDNN has had police turn-in Glock 22 for under $350, too -- and that might be my first choice.

I LOVE my Taurus PT 100 AR...........have put about 500 rds through it without a jam. Field strips in about 10 seconds (or less)
It has chambered and ejected without one hitch.
Mags are loaded with Federal Hydro-shocks for self defense.

I consider those police trade-ins to be about the best buy around. Many have night-sites (sites that can be seen in the dark). I bought such a GLOCK 23. Upon the first shooting, the take-down pin came out. I returned it to GLOCK for a free repair and I consider it to be the finest defensive pistol I own right now (and I own about a dozen defensive pistols).

I have owned and carried S&Ws for >30 yrs and would rather have a baseball bat than a Sigma. That said, I put Glock somewhere south of Sigma. Look at the Taurus or the Astra for an affordable and safe handgun. Get some professional instruction and practice, practice, practice! So many folks decide to buy a firearm, shoot it once and then put it away to gather cobwebs. When the SHTF, you'll always revert to your training...if you have any. Just my $0.02 worth.

Any repiutable brand should suffice. The Sigma's do have a bad rep. though.

gabarber1-

I will tell you that the SW40VE is an excellant gun for it's cost. I have one which cost me $289 new, have used it on groundhogs and informal plinking with over a 1000 rounds thru it. It is very accurate and hasn't malfunctioned with hollow points or ball. Some folks have trouble shooting it accurately due to it's heavy trigger, but I'll also tell you that the trigger gets much better as it is used and practiced.
This is not a serious target pistol, but a great plinker and carry gun.
I own a Sig and a Beretta and Rugers and have had a Glock 19 too-all nice, and while I prefer the Sig and Beretta, they are at least twice the cost, and the Glock is nearly twice also. Many people also have the first impression of the Sigmas from the 1990s in their minds-these were not as aestetically appealing, and the feel was not great, but it was not all bad. Also, the early Sigmas had some trouble with the dust cover on the lower frame tube area creating cracks, which S&W would replace, and they will upgrade those older broken frames with the new enhanced pistol-I'm told.
I would go and handle the gun if I were you. The grip is awesome now and shares the same angle as the 1911a1, and feels great in both hands, and you won't be out much-$289 for a great shooting compact .40 cal gun is a nice deal to me anyday.

40 cal.

I have an early sigma SW40F. When I first got it, I couldn't hit anything with it. Had a few snickering club members try it and they had the same result which restored my confidence. I brought it back to Smith and they went through it (new barrel, springs, rod, etc) and a free magazine for my trouble. Since that time it has been exceptionally reliable and very accurate to 25 yards. I have no issues carrying it for defense purposes.

thanks

thanks to all of you who replied to my posting! I am suprised to see so many. I want to look at a few especially the sw40ev and the Glock 22 or 23- which is better between the two glocks, and where can I at least see some pics. Also, where is a good website for used handguns to purchase, especially the police turn ins? Thanks again for all your input. One post had said the sw40ev was a compact- what is the difference? is it the barrel length, or how is it determined? I also wanted to add that I will probably be joining my local police reserve, so I will be using this weapon for that duty as well if I can.

If the Glock fits your hand, I honestly think the compact Glocks are terrific. In this case, the Glock 23 is the best CCW pistol. Its slim, compact, lightweight and capable of carrying a lot of rounds. They're also durable and reliable. The G22 doesn't fit my hand as well as the G23, since the fingergroove spacing is more than the compacts.

Skip the Sigma. Also check out the SIGs, either the P226 or P229 would be an awesome pistol in .40.

Good luck.

I guess the reason I have not looked at sigs is I have heard that they are quite pricey- with that being said, you reccomend the glock over the sigma- what makes the glock better, and what is wrong with a sigma- keep in mind the fact that I have a mortgage and a wife and two kids to feed!:)

you can find a police turn in that is certified from Sig for a good price

But what is a good price? I am probably looking to spend about $300.00- or am I living a pipe dream? please get back to me on this, but at this time I must sign off and get some z's - 5:00 comes way too early in the upper midwest- thanks again for all the input

The early SIGMAs had some real quality issues. In recent years that has apparently been resolved. A lot of shooters here who have them speak highly of them, now. Early owners did not.

But if you ever want to upgrade or sell your weapon, a Glock, while costing a bit more, will likley get you a great portion of your purchase price.

In the price range your looking at you should consider taking a look at the EAA Compact Witness (I like the wonder finish). It's inexpensive, built like a tank, and the ones I've fired have always been accurate and reliable, you also get the option of carrying "cocked & locked" if you prefer.

Just my suggestion...

I paid $299 for a used S&W 4006 w/ nite sights that was a trade in from Wyoming fish & game. Of the .40's I've had, it's the only one that still resides here. I have never been a fan of the .40 (I'm one of those 10mm guys), but the S&W 3rd gen steel guns just shoot, handle and look so nice that it had to stay. I've had a Sigma, Glock 22 and Ruger p94 and have fired countless other .40's (Sig, HK, Beretta, Springfield, etc.). The S&W 4006 is the only one that "felt right"; all the others had excessively snappy recoil for such a mediocre cartridge.

FYI, a brand new 4006 will be in the mid-$700 range.
