I won't be doing that again

I put hogue furniture on my PGO mossberg 12 ga, expecting the recoil to diminish drastically, and I got a busted lip out of it instead.

I've shot a few magnum shells through it before with the factory forened/grip, and while I did lose grip of the forend before (wearing gloves because of the cold though), it only grazed my beard and gave me a slight nudge on the chin.

Today was the first time shooting it with the new furniture. I believe the furniture is called "recoil tamer" or something like that. I've ran a few boxes of cheap birdshot (no.8) through it at one time with no problems other than a little soreness, so I figured I'd go ahead and see just how good the hogue stuff works, and loaded up a round of 3" 00.

I'm a terrible shot, so I almost always look down the bead, even though it's awkward. As soon as I pulled the trigger it came back and hit me in the upper lip. I actually thought it knocked my teeth out, but it just cut a big gash on the inside of my lip, and a small cut on the top of my lip next to my mustache. I'm not even sure if I hit what I was aiming at, and frankly, I don't care. There was another person there when I did this too, so now I have to live with the humiliation of getting beat up by a shotgun.

As much as I like the firepower and compactness of my mossberg, the whole PGO thing has got to go. I love it for backpacking, and it's manageable with reduced recoil birdshot, but it is absolutely brutal, and dangerous, with buckshot and slugs. I originally bought it for self-defense, and if I can't even shoot the kind of shells that are adequate for SD because I can't control it and am too scared of the recoil to even aim, it's pretty much worthless for it's intended use.

I absolutely love that gun too, but as wickedly awesome as it is, I like having all my teeth (yes, there are a few Oregonians that have more than one tooth, believe it or not), and not spitting up blood everytime I eat or drink. My lip is swollen and I'm still spitting out blood while typing this, and it's been about three hours now.

Now I'm either going to trade my 12 for a 20 ga PGO, or put a full stock on it, or sell it and put the money towards a 590. My love affair with 12 pistol grips just died though, and unless I start taking steroids or get another growth spurt (which is highly unlikely as I'm 26) and become much stronger than I am now, I don't care to relive that experience again.

So, my word of advice for all of you who are recoil sensitive, weak, or just don't like the feeling of getting kicked in the mouth by a souless piece of black polymer; don't shoot magnum shells with a pistol grip shotgun.

PGO installed on my Maverick 88 is how I got to be known as "Rocky Raccoon" for a couple of weeks....

Matched pair of "Shiners", severely mooshed but not broken nose, and "fat lips"...

I had installed the PGO just for 'grins', and to see if it was any good for any practical purpose. Went OK with the light #7-1/2 #8 target loads...put in a 3" #4Buck load...Shooting Budd tossed a target, I swung up the PGO Maverick BOOOOM!

OW!!! QUIT IT!!! among some other ahhhhh "more colorful things" that were said.

I feel Your Pain

There's a reason God put stocks on shotguns.(LOL) I learned the same lesson many years ago on an 870 PGO that a hunting buddy owned. Top front teeth all the way through the upper lip. Didn't loose any teeth, but it sure put a damper on the weekend in deer camp, Especially the steaks and drinks around the fire part. Also is the reason my now grown children have never seen "Daddy" without a mustache. You might want to rethink the 20 ga part. Pound for pound the recoil with the high power loads isn't much different:eek:

Sadly shaking old grey head....

I tried to tell you. Pistol grips are for gripping pistols....

Re your options, in your shoes I'd install a standard stock, get it fitting right and never look back....

Also please seek medical attention. Some stitches will help that lip heal faster.

Don't ask how I know....

HAHAHAHA PGO shotguns...

Why not put a Folding stock on it? Then you can keep the compactness and still shoot it with a stock.

PGO is an awful choice for Shotguns.

I too feel your pain

The first time I shot a friends scoped inline muzzleloader , I got a really nice scope cut above my eye , he still reminds me of it :D

PGO is supposed to be shot from the hip.
Yup, I'm a smaller guy and have the same gun. I have shot 00 and 000 magnum loads through it, and you're right, it's a beast. But it isn't meant for trap shooting. I keep it near the bed for my hd weapon. If I have to practice I shoot as many 00 loads as my right hand can handle and shoot another 30 or so #7 rounds. I'll never kill any four legged critters with it, but anybody between me and my front door is in deep stuff.

Oh and Coosbaycreep, I have a polymer stock for that gun if you want it (500A)

and loaded up a round of 3" 00
I originally bought it for self-defense, and if I can't even shoot the kind of shells that are adequate for SD because I can't control it

After you put a stock back on it, you might want to look into some 2 3/4" reduced recoil loads. They pattern very well in several of my guns, and I believe them to be at least "adequate" for defensive purposes.

Pistol grip only is the absolute worst thing ever done to a shotgun, AOW and SBS excluded.

Out of curiosity, why do you think that SBS are worse than PGO shotguns? I've shot some that patterned well and shot slugs accurately.

I saw a young boot MP do the same thing w/ a breaching round in a Rem870 w/ just the pistol grip once. It convinced me to go for folding stocks instead. I'm thinking of getting a AR15 style colapser for my 870 now. It only has a top folder.

You know, I don't ever recall seeing a news photo or footage of a cop or a soldier using a pistol grip shotgun.
Sunday night on PBS on the show NOW they were following Marines in Afghanistan and at one point they were policing an open market and one of the Marines puts his shoulder to his breacher barreled shotgun and pops a lock. It was cool real life stuff. Tom

Same thing happened with my friend's brother. He went to fire his Mossberg 500 with folded CopStock and it hit right in his mouth. Cracked a tooth.

Those damned busted lips hurt like all hell. It's been yeeears since I've pulled that trick, but I've done it nonetheless.

See, where you screwed up is that you actually used the shotgun with the PG. Those are made for guys that take pictures of them for the internet or show their (unfired) gun to their friends.

When I was young, a guy I knew tried to shoot a 12 gauge with high brass field loads from the hip. Can't remember for sure if he broke his wrist or not. IIRC, it was just real sore for quite a while.

A 12 gauge high velocity sabot is in the same ball park as the nitro express African rifles (400 grain bullet at 2,000fps). Why would you want to shoot an elephant rifle with a pistol grip?

Yet more support for that old saying, "Pistol-grip-only shotguns always draw blood."

Nobody bothers to mention that it's the shooter's blood though.

Since you claim to be a terrible shot, think about taking lessons from a professional shotgun instructor--after you get different furniture of course. Shotguns are more fun than the thought of Rep. Carolyn McCarthy being allowed to cross the street by herself.

I don't get that last bit. Explain?

Nope.

What I learned as a young vaudevillian watching Gypsy Rose Lee from the wings is "always leave them wanting more."

Now that I have you intrigued, keep reading my messages and you'll find much else to interest and entertain you.

Don't forget to give the monkey a few dollars as he passes through the audience with his outstretched hat.
