Hello there folks. Well last Saturday I finally got to take the IAI M1 carbine I got for Christmas to the range. It was rough going at first, I had a few failiures to feed with a full magazine. The problem went away when I didn't fully load the magazine. I shrugged and chalked it up to the newness of the rifle and kept shooting. I had just finished my first box of Federal FMJ rounds when I switched to Wichester SP rounds. The accuracy seemed to improve a bit, but after about 11 rounds of Winchester the operating slide slipped off of the bolt assembly and locked back. I unloaded the rifle and put it away at that point. I got it home, field stripped it and cleaned it. No parts appeared to be broken. After a thorough cleaning I put the rifle back together and all seems to be well. Cycling the action by hand seems to work ok, but now I don't trust this rifle. Has anyone out there had a similar problem with an IAI M1 Carbine? Any insight into this problem would be appreciated.

IAI M1 Carbine Problem
Hello there folks. Well last Saturday I finally got to take the IAI M1 carbine I got for Christmas to the range. It was rough going at first...
I see your problem. You got an Israeli made gun for Christmas and you shoot it on Saturday. If you got it for Chaunukah and didn't shoot on the Jewish sabbath I think you wouldn't be having these problems. Sorry, it is late and I just couldn't resist. I actually don't have anything to contribute as I don't yet own an M1 Carbine so I have no insights into the gun. Have you called the factory's CS number to see if they have any ideas?

I have yet to be able to contact IAI on the phone due to the hours I work. It'll happen this week. I'm trying to avoid having to send it back to the company, as I hate to ship firearms if I can avoid it. Sending it back is my last resort.

My IAI works great, but it is not fond of some 30 round mags.
Give them a buzz tommorow and hear out what they have to say.

FWIW- the only thing Israeli about IAI M-888 Carbines is the 'I' in the name........ as they are made in Texas with new recievers/barrels and Mil-spec parts. Mine is all Springfield Armory parts-wise

Chiam ...

Yeah and he should only use 18 rounds at a time!

Rusty

P.S. IAI is notorious for having problems with their guns out of the box, however, reports have it that they are good at warranty repairs, once returned. Go figure.

P.S. IAI guns are made in Texas. They're JINO.

Never had that problem, usually that only happens with people that have the magic death touch and can un-oprod a M-1, Garand or M-14 just by cycling it. I'd put it back together and keep on shooting unless it does it again.

I don't think its a big deal, I'd put it back togather and fire away. My IAI has always worked great right out of the box. Maybe get rid of the soft nosed bullets until it's broken in. But call the service rep, thats what the warranty is for.

Mine has always functioned perfectly. They are made in Houston, with mil-spec and many GI parts actually. I took mine by to have the hole that holds the bolt back milled a little deeper and they were very friendly.

I would agree, M1s are notorius for having the up ord, unop by itself. Not really an IAI issue, but a M1 design issue. My GIs have all done this at one time or another.

Don't sweat it, just go shoot your fun new gun!

Good shooting!!!!!!!!!
