Id of milatary Case XX

My wife was married to her first husband for around 30 yrs when he passed away. After we were married and several years later she was going through items that had belonged to her husband's dad. He was in Europe and served with the 3rd Army from at least 1943 until the end. In these items was a single blade knife made by Case and only marking on it is Case's Tested XX, and on other side CASE, BRADFORD, Pa. The knife has a wooden handle, topped with what appears to be alum with counter sunk removable slotted nut to hold every thing together, the blade looks like it was broken or intentionally shortened.. Any idea's as to when this was made??

Sounds like it is a 1914-1920 folder. Probably not military if not marked as such.

Keep in mind that a knife doesn't have to have been issued to have been carried by a soldier/sailor/marine.

What's important is the window of manufacture for the markings on a Case knife and the fact that the history of the markings is very well known to Case collectors so it is easy to establish the period a knife was made.

Case used the "Case XX" marking from about 1940 until 1965.

Prior to 1940 they used "Case Tested XX".
After 1965 it became "Case XX U.S.A.".

The "wood handle" is very likely the compressed leather washers they used during WWII.

I'm just assuming that it was a folder because of "single blade knife made by Case", but rc brings up a good point.

Is it a sheath knife or a folder?

I just jumped to the conclusion it was a sheath knife from the aluminum butt-cap and nut discription.

But I agree it sure would help to get a little more info on what type of knife it is, or even better, a picture.

It sure sounds like just a old Case hunting knife, but pictures would work wonders

Those has liner locks as well.

I think the thumb stud was on the bottle opener / screw-driver blade!

It's really hard to open a pocket knife with a beer bottle in one hand!

I have one stainless steel GI MIL-K like that.

Picture of Case XX

Took me a while to get the pictures that would show something of what I have.
The handle being wood was something I didn't think that Case put out but what do I know . Anyway these might show something that will help put it in a time frame.

I'd have to guess that it was a 1940's commercial that he carried on his own instead of an issue knife. The military pieces were uniformly made with the stacked leather washers and that wooden handle looks to be too well integrated to be a "Theater" modification or post-War restoration.

Thanks HSO mostly was wondering about the year or close to the year. On the handle close to hilt is scribed 1943 and in photo you can see his name and serial number. I know from looking at his uniform that he served in the 3rd Army but don't remember what the other shoulder patch was. Again thanks to all.
