I am in the process of buying a Mossberg shotgun. The seller have owned it for at least ten years, and says the paint job is original. He is unsure of the model number and I’d like to get some help ID’ing it. The serial number is KO164XX.
The seller lives several hours drive from me so that is not an option.

Sorry about the bad picture.

Thanks

I'm highly inclined to doubt that's an original paint job, unless it's some extremely weird contract gun. What does the receiver say? It may be a 500atp. It's a 500 though.

Its original finish.
Mossberg offered the 500 in several types of camo finish for many years.

The finish on that gun is called OFM Mossberg Camo.HTH

The camo looks like what Mossberg used before they started putting real camo patterns on their guns. I know they used it on turkey and duck guns back in the day, but this gun with the long magazine and speed feed stock was designed for HD, so the camo is a bit odd. At any rate it is probably original.

Concur.

I recall we sold that model new at Gander Mountain around 2002, but I don't recall a factory speedfeed stock?...

OK, so you all seem to agree that the paint is original. I think its a few notches below pretty and my thought was to Duracoat it anyway. The factory speed-feed stock again looks odd to me, but I can live with that.

I don't have the gun in front of me so I'm unsure what the receiver says. But It seems that you are leaning towards a 500 series.

I was looking for a inexpensive hunting near salt-water and don't-care-if-I-stumble kind of gun. The weight of an extended magazine tube makes me wonder if I should look elsewhere. I hear that changing the tube is a pain, but that the barrels come off easily enough. I was planing on getting the extra barrel.

Thanks for all your help.

If you plan to change the barrel, you'll need to change the tube, yes. And they aren't that hard to change.

It looks like a variation on a Model 500 Persuader. The mag will hold 8 shells. It looks like it has a speedfeed stock and handgrip. Ask what the model number (stamped above the serial number) is. If it's something like ATP8 it's a 8 shot persuader variant.

My 500 has a wood stock and a bulkier square fore end.
