I'm looking for info about the Idaho enhanced concealed carry permit. What is required, what is taught and how it compares to the standard carry permit. There's a class on January 17 and I'm probably going to sign up.
Thanks, Jeff

This link seems to answer all your questions;

"As of July 1, 2013, Idaho now offers two options for conceal carry permits. One option is referred to as the Standard CCW and the other is referred to as the Enhanced CCW."

"The end difference is how many other states will recognize the permit."

Actually imho the real purpose is it is a way for the State of Idaho is get more revenue for conceal carry applicants as the enhanced permit is only required by five states.

Interesting, it seems like the standard is more recognized by other states. Maybe I'll just take it in the name of education and keep my standard permit. I'm sure the class would be informative and fun.

What?

If you don't want reciprocity in those extra states...don't get the enhanced permit.

However, if you DO want reciprocity in those other states, well, this is awesome. Maybe you don't consider the ability to legally carry worthwhile, but when I travel to other states, well...I like to be able to legally carry. The ability to legally carry in 5 more states is substantial.

Seriously, I hadn't heard of that...but I think it's AWESOME. It's an annoying catch that when your state is good and does not require as many hoops to jump through for a license, you then cannot carry in as many other states.

Splitting it up so that you have the option like this is seriously spectacular. I wish GA had this option.

Of course, the real solution is to have all of the states go to permitless carry, like AZ/VT/AK/AR/etc...

As I understand it, it allows reciprocity with five additional states (Nevada, New Mexico, South Carolina, Virginia, Washington) that don't recognize the standard CCW. Not a big deal perhaps if you don't travel to those states, but a very big deal for those who do.

I wonder why WA is on the list of states that will only recognize the enhanced license. We don't have any training requirement here, pretty much just need a pulse and ~$60 to get a CPL.

What did WA find disagreeable about ID's permit?

Wait, maybe it's the age thing again, like FL. We used to recognize FL but the FL passed a law allowing minor veterans to get a permit, so WA had to pull the reciprocity agreement.

Curious: do they go over the laws in each of those extra States, or do they leave that up to the "enhancee" and just make the other training itself more rigorous (for example, live-fire quals, etc.) to conform to those of the extra States?

Enhanced does what, for the carrier?

Two major things. 1. Increased reciprocity from other states. 2. Allows for the holder to carry on state owned college/university campuses. (with some exceptions such as dorms and certain large venues).

Those are the two biggies.

Do you have to be 21 to get an Idaho enhanced concealed carry permit?

Remember your CCW class is the beginning of your training.
Yes. 21.
The basic permit is really easy to get with minimal requirements. The enhanced requires classroom time and live-fire qualifications. With the enhanced we get reciprocity with all of our border states, except Oregon, who steadfastly refuses to recognize us, while I'm pretty sure we accept theirs. When I got my permit 25 or so years ago, the requirements were much the same as for the current enhanced program, but I'd have to take the classes again to upgrade my permit. I probably should because I carry in Nevada somewhat frequently. More often in Oregon... but they apparently aren't going to cut me any slack anyway. :)
