I have a brother who is graduating from college soon and I plan on giving him an XD9SC as a graduation present. He has his CCL and just needs a pistol to go with it - I've narrowed it down to the XD through extensive BS sessions with him.

Anyway, instead of just giving him the pistol, I am trying to think of some way to personalize the gun a bit. One thing that came to mind was to have something engraved on the slide. Of course, I could just engrave his name, graduation year, or something of the sort, but thought I'd ask you all if anyone could think of any cool quotes, references, verses, latin phrases, Irish blessing, or some such thing that would be fitting (and that could fit on the slide of an XD9SC).

I'd put a nice holster ahead of engraving on thelist of priorities, myself.

But if I were to engrave, I'd go with the Second Amendment on one side and your (or his) state's wording on the other

The Bruniral slide finish used on an XD is harder then woodpecker lips.

It is a carbonitride or gas carburizing hardening process under the black exterior finish.

I doubt any engraver would be willing to damage their tools on one.

The other thing is, if you did somehow engrave it, you have destroyed the layer of bullet-proof & rust-proof the Bruniral finish provides.

Now you got an XD you actually have to clean and wipe down every once and awhile to keep it from rusting.

You might consider having a nice gun rug machine embroidered with the pertinent info on it.

What color slide, the stainless steel or the black slide? I am with the others on this, a nice leather holster and belt set with the XD, possibly with even a mag holder instead of the engraving, with the leather engraved with quotes. My reasoning is similar to RCmodel, but I also think of the XD as a working gun, and not as a "pretty" gun.

If I were going to engrave it though, I would get the stainless model and put vines and leaves on it, with a quote in small font. Something like this: http://ic2.pbase.com/g3/64/839664/2/94733472.M0wN1fdS.jpg Another option would be the university motif and "To (his name) for graduating (uni and date) with love, (your name). My idea is something like this: http://www.airforcetimes.com/xml/ne...le_pistol_091608/091208af_eagle_pistol800.JPG which isn't university motif, but a good idea.

Thanks for the great ideas. Based on the input, I may rethink engraving and maybe go with some of the more important acessories, but if I do go ahead with it, I'll probably use the ideas that you linked to. Thanks!
