Klamath, there's a sticky above (1st post in the forum) about how to get an ID on an older S&W. Read the intro then go to the end and post.

That will do the trick for you. If yours looks identical to his, then it's probably the same model unless it's a foreign copy (and there were lots). Only pictures of yours can really decide.

I reread the original post and now understand part of the problem.

"What I'm getting at I just can't believe that this pistol is was made in 1971 when I know I've had it stored in a ammo box for about 20 years are longer."

The patent date mentioned is 1871, not 1971.

Can someone help with a couple barrel id questions

Is a S&W .38 Special CTG, Nickel, 4” barrel, same serial numbers C 306XXX on frame base, cylinder face, bottom of barrel. It is here I have the question some distance in front of the C, is a twice as big capital R, then right after the C is an N same size, then the serial #... then very close to where cylinder swings in is a clearly marked five pointed star…Does this signify anything of special interest as I’ve not seen it discussed anywhere. Thank you for your esteemed expertise and time. Sincerely, a humble but irritated Old Joe America
