biggun44mag: Your 34-1 was born in 1982. I'm assuming your Model 28-2's serial actually starts with an N, which would date between 1974-77.
IDPA.ALEX: Somewhere between 1917-1940; probably in the middle of that range.
atlscrog: Somewhere between 1962 and 1969; probably the middle of that range, since 1969 ended the numeric serials at 786544.
stew38: Your Model 15 dates to 1966. Your Model 36 dates between 1962 and 1969, probably in the earlier-middle part.

I have a Model 17 with no dash. 6 inch pinned barrel in 22 rimfire. There are three screws in the side plate and one in front of the trigger guard. The butt is square and the serial is K3604xx. Can you tell me when it was made?

Caveat: I'm new at this and, as Fuff reminds us, a little knowledge and a newly acquired book can be a dangerous thing. When one of the old-timers checks back in, I'd be curious as to what's up with the weird gap where the 3Dxxxxx numbers would be expected around 1978-1979 which would otherwise work for a model 10-8.
IOW, I'm not intentionally ignoring Daizee. Any liklihood the "2D99999" on page 399 is a typo and should read "3D99999"?

Oh no, my gun is "special"? :-(
before I brought it home, I called S&W to order a new hammer.
the guy thought the 10-8 was post-MIM w/ the firing pin in the
frame. I had a moment of doubt (How could this be??) and decided
to call back when I had it in hand. Late '70's sounds much more my speed.

My personal wager is "typo" on the part of 3rd edition. 1978 should be close enough - goes along with the "dash" number and all.

bought it from a older gent who said he bought it before 1965.... It has a nickel finish im going to say its a 8.5 over all, no scratches, just a cpl of pin sized spots up under the grip...the blued parts look good with no corrosion on them.
I have a picture..dont know how to post it, i can email it to someone if they could post it for me.

1994-ish. Those 3 letter prefix things make me nuts - no guarantees. It should have Hogue grips, a .312 smooth trigger and replaceable front sight??
Cool. I can't find the "KL" series. Hang in and one of my betters will be along to help. The 15-3 ran from '67 through '77 if that helps.
Time for me to hang it up.

Yes, it does have Hogue grips. I'm a complete novice at this, so I'm not sure if it has a .312 smooth trigger or if the front sight is replaceable. The front sight that is on there now is a raised black bar about 3/4 inch long, just behind the barrel port.
This is my first gun purchase and I just picked it up Thursday. It's not new and looks like some areas could have been cleaned a little better. The front face of the cylinder, the topstrap inside the frame by the forcing cone and inside the barrel by the port. Also, there are dark stains around the hammer.
Any recommendations on good cleaning products to remove the fouling?

It's nearly impossible to clean all marks off the cylinder face and forcing cone. There's a lotta blastin' going on there. There shouldn't be anything that's not smooth, tho.
Stains around the hammer? Are you sure that's not just the case hardening of the hammer itself? If you're concerned, post a picture in a new thread and the experts (i.e. not me) will give their opinions.

Daizee: Your Model 10-8 was most likely born in 1978. Although the xDxxx serial #s can be a bit sketchy, and the SC is not infallible, the model # designation gives us date ranges of production and I would bet that your gun was built around 1978.

Not to take the thread off track, but I just got my 28-2 the other day. It is a darker blue. And under the trigger guard and grip frame it almost looks black, not blued like a blued gun looks normally. Any ideas what the finish is ? I have seen other model 28's and they were blued as one would expect. Mine looks almost black, a matte blue maybe ? "357 Mag, 6" barrel, think its a sq butt, 6 shots, currently scoped, Ser# S23494X model 28-2 Highway Patrolman" it was dated as 1963' ish
