Thanks

Good morning Radagast:

Thank you so much for the data.

HTML:
If you do get it working, treat it as a 4 shooter with the chamber under the hammer left empty - the firing pin protrudes and could set off a round if the gun was dropped.
Yes, I noticed that. Important to keep in mind.

HTML:
Parts can be had here:
https://www.gunpartscorp.com/Manufac...lver-38376.htm
I'll give getting the missing part some thought.
It may not be worth the trouble and expense as it is not in good condiiton and I don't plan to use it but as something to hang on the wall.

Once again, thank you very much.

Best regards,

CA

Charles Alexander:
I was going to suggest that a Shadow Box would be its best destination, but thought that may come across as rude.
I'm glad to be of help.
All the best.

Good idea

Hello again, Radagast:

HTML:
... suggest that a Shadow Box would be its best destination, but thought that may come across as rude.
No sir, not at all. :)
I appreciate your suggestion.

Being an architect, I have used shadow box displays for many items.
I had thought the old S&W could well be in one, but have realised it will require some work on (plating, missing parts, etc) it else it will not loog too grand.

Thanks again,

CA

Hello Sir, I need your valuable services once again. I have recently come into possession of an old S&W revolver that I am trying to find a DOM for. No locking lug on barrel. Appears to be missing the knob on the end of the ejector rod. (if there was a knob?) I think it pre-dates the Model 10.

a) .38 Special
b) 4"
c) square
d) 6 shot
e) Groove in top strap
f) 16500 (on butt, on barrel, and on front of cylinder) No letter.
g) None

Thanks for all you do!

km101:
You have a .38 Military & Police 1st Model / Model of 1899 Army & Navy manufactured between 1899 & 1902 in the serial range 1 to 20975.
Round butt.
No locking lug.
Hard rubber or walnut grips.
Barrel marked .38 S&W Special CTG & U.S. Service CTG
Knurled end but no knob on ejector rod.

In 2006 the Standard Catalog of S&W gave a value of $700 in excellent condition.

Thank you Sir. I appreciate the information. The gun is far from excellent condition externally, as it has light rust over the entire exterior. Also the gun has been re-blued at some point, so its value as a collector is gone. However the gun locks up tight and shoots well with standard velocity .38 spl ammo and reloads.

But I have other revolvers that I enjoy shooting more, so this one will not see a lot of use. As mentioned to someone above, I may consign it to a shadow box and give it a well earned retirement.

Hey Radagast I'm back and thanks for the info so far!

Model 10-5
4" barrel
.38 Spcl.
Ser. # D5210xx

I also found on Google the NMPD markings mean "New Mexico Police Dept" for the Albuquerque Police Dept.

.455_Hunter:
6 shooter? Then its a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 1st or Second Change, manufactured between 1906 & 1909 in the serial range 73251 to 146899. 2nd Change has two dowel pin to center the extractor.
No internal hammer block on this gun, so treat it as a 5 shooter, leaving the hammer down on an empty chamber. It predates heat treatment of cylinders, so stick to standard velocity lead loads only.

586-1 Born On Date??

Thanks for any+all info..

I have a S&W Model 586-1 6" Blue Large factory Target Grips White Outline/Red Ramp.

S/N AYF93XX

In 90/95% Condition Value Est.??;)

Thanks again..Bill.

29-2

Acquired today:)

Model 29-2
6" bbl
Serial # N427XXX

Target hammer, trigger & stocks. Red insert in front sight, white outline rear. Not a mark on the gun...very faint turn line. The walnut box has a few scratches, wear on the velour, has all papers, warrantee card etc. No screwdriver or swab & the brush has been used. Any clue on value would be great.

Thanks for your efforts!

Would appreciate if you could give me some information and DOB on the following revolver:
Model 49
2" barrel
Magna grips with S&W medallions, no diamond around grip screw.
5 shot fluted cylinder
SN:J1059XX
Barrel is pinned.
Thanking you in advance for your help.

Your Model 586-1 Distinguished Combat Magnum to late 1987 or early 1988, probably December to January, with January more likely. It should have been a 586-2 by that point, obviously they were still transitioning.
The 586-1 is subject to a recall. With some magnum ammo the primer may flow back into the firing pin bushing and lock up the gun. Under the recall S&W will install a new firing pin and bushing and pay shipping both ways. Call customer service if you want your gun done.
If it has already been modified there will be an M stamped after or close to the model no. under the cylinder yoke cut out.
I live in Australia, so I'm not familiar with US prices. My gut feeling based on conversations on the board is that low would be $550, high would be $650. Better to start a new thread with pics and get a more realistic evaluation.

.455 Hunter:
Your Model 10-5 .38 Military & Police tapered barrel dates to 1969.

DAdams:
The number you have given is either an assembly number stamped by the factory to track parts or a departmental rack number applied after it was sold.
The serial number will be three letters and 4 numerals, eg: ABC1234. It will be on the bottom of the grip frame, it should also be under the cylinder yoke cut out.

dalehartog:
You have a Pre-Model 43 / Model of 1955 .22/.32 Kit Gun Airweight. it is an alloy frame & cylinder adjustable sight J frame. Put a magnet on the cylinder, it should drop off.
Introduced at serial number 5000 in 1954, by 1955 serial numbers had hit 11000, so I would go with 1954 and a first year of manufacture gun.

WaywardSon:
The N4xxxxx serial range was used in 1977 & 1978. The barrel length for those years should have been 6.5 inches, with a 6 inch barrel introduced in 1979. If yours is 6.0 inches then my guess is 1978 and one of the first off the line with the new barrel.
Best to start a new thread for valuations. In 2006 the Standard Catalog of S&W gave a value of $700 in excellent condition without box. I think picks of gun and box in a new thread will give a better idea of current values.

ruger1228:
Your Model 49 Bodyguard was manufactured in 1973. Built on the steel J frame, the Model 49 was produced from 1959 to 1996. The grips are correct for the gun and probably original.

You are correct sir. I didn't really look at the gun or measure the barrel...was too excited to have a 29 in that condition. The barrel does indeed measure 6 1/2"....thank you again.

Waywardson: in that case it could be 77 or 78, with early 78 being my guess as the service grade N frames were using a different serial range at that time. I doubt the presentation grade Models 25, 27, & 29 were produced in great numbers.

Can you give me dates on two Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman revolvers? Both are 4 inch, .357 Mag.

Serial # S271XXX

Serial # N526XXX

Thank you in advance for your help.

Geezer Glide:
S271xxx is 1966 or 1967. Serial range for those years was S262000 to S289999, so 1966 seems likely.
N526xxx falls in the period 1978-1980. My guesstimate would be late 1978 or early 1979.

S&W .32 Long CTG

Curious about the age of this gun. Any help is very much appreciated.

a) .32
b) 4 or 5 (dont have it with me)
c) round
d) 6
e) open
f) 1396xx

No letter in front of serial. Only serial I can see is on bottom of barrel where the cylinder release is. (can not see the serial if the cylinder is closed)
