I have a six inch Highway Patrolman. great gun for the range or hunting. The Model 12 would make a fine carry gun.
Bottom line, there are more Model 28s than Model 12s.

Hi Radagast,
Long time, no new shooters to query... Working to change that.

Can you please point me to the dob of the following:

16-4
.32
6"
BJB0318

I'm in your neck of the woods at the end of the month... Buy you a beer?

thefresh2o:
Model 63 1977.22/32 Kit Gun Stainless was manufactured in 1982.

Model 17-4 K22 Target Masterpiece was also manufactured in 1982.

Can you help me with my 6" Highway Patrolman?

a) caliber 357
b) bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle) 6"
c) grips shape (round or square) square
d) number of shots/cylinder bores 6
e) type of sights. adjustable
f) serial number N518***
g) Model number if it is under the crane. Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman

Real curious to find out when this gun hatched..... :)

mikemyers:
Your Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman was manufactured between 1978 & 1980. The Standard Catalog of S&W does not give a year to year break down for that period, so the best I can do is guesstimate 1978 or early 1979. The N5xxxxx serial range was used for the Model 28 & Model 58 during that period. It's unlikely that the entire serial range as used, but your gun does fall early in the range, so it is likely to have been produced earlier in that period.

Here's my new-to-me S&W revolver that is proving a bit difficult to date:

Model 30-1 blued, wooden grips, round butt.
Barrel is 3".
Six-round cylinder.
Caliber is .32 S&W Long.
S/N on butt: H409xx.
Fixed sights.

Manufacturing date would be much appreciated.

A bit more info, and I found I was looking for J-frame and it's actually an I-frame, built around 1970.

Your Model 30-1 .32 Hand Ejector was manufactured in either 1971 or 1972. Serial range for those years was H30001 to H60000, so 1971 seems likely.

sigsmoker:
Your Model 629 .44 Magnum Stainless was manufactured in 1987.

Radagast, can I ask you about three guns?

My very first gun:
S&W 44 Magnum M29-2, 6" barrel, S/N #N7421**, bought new around 1984?

second gun:
S&W 44 Magnum M29-3, 10 5/8" barrel, S/N ADY06**, bought from a friend a bit later

Also,
S&W 357 Model 19-3, 2 1/2" barrel, S/N #6K600**, bought used from a co-worker a few years later

Explanation - "Dirty Harry" burned the impression of what a gun should look like into my mind, and I wanted either a Colt Python, or one of Harry's guns. A fellow who had a small gunshop in Michigan sold it to me, and later installed an optical sight, which I now wish I hadn't bought, as it made shooting more difficult by magnifying all my hand tremors or whatever they're called. A friend at work who was very into shooting sold me his Silhouette gun, along with all his reloading gear, and then a Model 41 which I won't ask about here. When the guys at my job found out how much I enjoyed shooting, one of them sold me the little 357, which is a lovely gun, but the hardest of all three for me to shoot with. I would still be using the Model 29 right now, but 38 Special loads feel better to me than 44 Special. I know, I'm a wimp. :what:

Your M29-2 was manufactured in 1980.
Your Model 29-3 The Silhouette was manufactured in 1984.
Your Model 19-3 Combat Magnum was manufactured in 1975.
Post the Model 41 serial number. I may be able to date it.

Great, thank you. Here's the M41 info:

Smith & Wesson Model 41, 22 LR, 7" barrel, S/N #A7151**

I bought it from the same fellow who sold me the Silhouette gun. At the time, I didn't know why anyone would want a '22 other than because it was inexpensive to shoot. He told me how good a gun it was, but it wasn't until many years later that I realized what he meant. Back then I assumed that "real guns" had to make "big holes", the bigger the better.... Oh well. Sounds pretty dumb to me now.

Some reviews say the new Performance Center guns are as good as the originals, but there are other reports that the new guns don't shoot as well. Being so involved in S&W, you must find it difficult to prevent a growing collection from overwhelming you.... :)

Once again, thank you.

Hi all,

I'm new to THR, and am looking at a possible trade for a 586, of which I have very limited info on. I should have more info later today (Sunday), but I was wondering what you might be able to glean from this picture of a 586 (of course, it's on the shooter's right side; I assume the left side would be of greater value...sorry).

a) caliber 357
b) bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle) 4"
c) grips shape (round or square) square
d) number of shots/cylinder bores 6 (I THINK...getting more info later today)
e) type of sights. front is fixed; rear, I have no idea
f) serial number (Sorry guys...no idea on serial)
g) Model number if it is under the crane. (Sorry again...more info tomorrow.)

I think everything is original, and I'm told it shoots very well. Are there any obvious horrible areas that would deter me in a trade, should the rest of the gun check-out? Is this worth a trade value of $600ish if it works as it should? If this is just too little information, I apologize, and will update when I receive that info later today.

Thanks in advance!

Here's a picture, and you can click onto the link below for a higher resolution look at the weapon.

Some holster wear on the high points. Scratches on the side plate above the trigger. Check the side plate to make sure it's a tight fit, the edge looks like it may have been boogered by a home gunsmith. maybe some nicks in the edge of the trigger guard. Check the case hardening on the hammer. Uneven wear or carbon?
I'm fairly certain its a pre-lock model.
If 586 or 586-1 with no M stamp under the yoke, then its subject to a recall to install a new firing pin bushing and firing pin. S&W will pay shipping both ways.

I'm the nerd who knows the dates. Old Fuff RC Model, Driftwood Johnson, Mr Borand or Jim K Will have a better idea of mechanical issues and value. I suggest you start a new thread and get their attention.
Assuming it passes the revolver check out, I would make that deal, but I am Australian and prices and availability are different here.

Thanks for the info, especially given the extremely limited information I've provided.

I'll start a thread when I get more info, and will also update here with some or all of the blanks filled-in.

Thanks again!
