All I can find on the 2nd Model .38 is Serial number range 1-108255 manufactured circa 1877-1897. You would have to do a little math and come up with a decent guess.

Yours is the 3rd model based on serial number. Range is 1909-1937 with serial nubers from 170001-242981 I would guess yours would be 1935-1937

If it doesn't have a model number inside the crane and I'm betting it doesn't. It is a Pre Model 36 or Pre Chiefs Special. Your was probably a 1956 gun. In 1957 the Model number was stamped in the crane. Serial numbers 55050-125000 produced from 1955-1957

The gun is a 32-20 Hand Ejector Model of 1905 4th Change. Appears the grips are original. Produced with 4,5, and 6" Barrels. Serial number range is 65701-144684 running from 1915-1940. Yours would be near the end of the run.

Educated guess 1984-1985 Serial number range N9000000-N97xxxx was from 1982-1986

I picked up a Model 28-2 357 Magnum Highway Patrolman today. Pinned barrel and recessed cylinder, 6" barrel. Target hammer and smooth target trigger. Inside the crane is marked model 28-2, SN# is N189236, both inside the crane and on the butt. I think the date range is 1973. Finish is excellent, only wear mark is the line around the cylinder from the locking lug. I'd like to find target grips or similar for it, and a military style shoulder holster for it (like the one Brad Pitt had for his .45 revolver in Fury

    a) .357 Magnum
    b) 3.5 inches
    c) Square
    d) 6
    e) Adjustable
    f) S797XX
    g) No model, but odd numbering unrelated to SN on crane (see photos)

This was my grandfather's pistol. While he sold parts/equipment for ships at work, he was pure Texan and fancied himself a cowboy and/or law officer, so I'm guessing this is something close to what Texas Highway Patrol or the Texas Rangers were carrying in the 1950s/1960s. He died circa 1966, so I'm assuming it dates to before then. Grips are obviously not original--but are very cool. I'd appreciate any information y'all can provide.

You have a Pre Model 27. Serial number shows shipping in 1951. The 3.5" Barrel in Nickel is fairly rare. The numbers you mentioned in the crane area are assembly numbers so all parts would remain together during assembly. I really think the grips are cool as well. Gun is in great shape. I'd love to have one just like it. Get some Flitz polish and lightly polish the nickel or you could even use some Ren Wax or Paste Turtle wax. The nickel finish is starting to look a little cloudy by the pictures. Not uncommon, but wax or light polish will most likely bring it back like new. Your grandfather did a heck of a job keeping this gun in great shape.

Its certainly not a model 3499. That's probably an assembly number if you found it under the crane. No such animal.
A hand ejector .32 with your serial number (which would be on the butt of the grip frame) is probably a .32 Hand Ejector Model of 1903 2nd Change which would have shipped in 1905-1906.
Should have a 3.25" Barrel if measured from end of barrel to face of cylinder. A picture might help confirm.
