Thank you again sir!:)

From what I read, 1982 was when S&W quit the p&r on their guns although at this same time the quality of their revolvers were on there way back up. The revolver I bought seems to be nicely made with great lock up and the original box is branded Bangor Punta, don't know if the BP on the box is a good thing or a bad thing?:)

scflor: 1981. The Model 31-1 Regulation Police was introduced in 1961, with the change over to the J frame from the slightly smaller I frame. The Regulation Police was introduced in 1917, but can trace it's roots back tot he original .32 Hand Ejector from 1896. The Model 31 was discontinued in 1991.

Could you tell me the approx. date of my two Smiths?

First one is a 629-5 8 3/8 Classic
serial # CER30xx

The second one is a 3" 37 Airweight round butt non-pinned
The serial number in the crane is 638xx
The number on the butt is AAS02xx

Thanks

oilburner350: CER30XX falls between October 2000 (CEFxxxx) & July 2001 (CEVxxxx).

AAS02xx falls between October 1982 (AAFxxxx) & December 1982 (ABLxxxx).

S&W 686 4" barrel 6 shot, DBF21XX, how old is it? Is it a "pre-lock" model?

I think you should recheck the serial#. M66 #'s begin with a K.

Sorry, I'm the one that needs to re-read the post.

The Dark Knight:
DBF21xx is from after the serial number ranges cut off in the Standard Catalog of S&W at Oct. 2004 with CTAxxxx, I would guess it as being from 2006 or later.
The S&W lock was introduced in 2001 with the 686-6. If you are after a pre-lock gun you need a 686-5 ( internal firing pin) or an early -1 to -4 (hammer mounted firing pin.)

higene:
Gun one, Model 17-4 K22 Target Masterpiece was manufactured in 1980.

Gun two, Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman was manufactured in 1975 to 1976. It was originally a .357 Magnum and has been altered by a gunsmith by fitting a new barrel and cylinder to chamber .44 Special.

Model 10-8
38 spl
4"barrel
6 shot
fixed sights
square butt
K frame

Serial No. ADU 14xx

If you can help with the approx. DOB of this revolver, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
T

Opps, I did it again! Another S&W, this time it is a model 36 Snubbie, with I believe a slim round butt. I think that the s/n might be missing the prefix letters? S/N is 82556. Does that sound right, because that is the serial number that is being DROS for me here in California.

bangkok:
82556 Makes it a 1956 or 1957 gun. If the model number is stamped inside the crane then it is a 1957 gun, as that is the year that model numbers were introduced. Before that it was simply the Chiefs Special. If no model number then it is a 1956 gun.

It should have a flat rather than concave cylinder latch. The original grips would be checkered walnut with an uncheckered diamond around the grip screws and a S&W medallion inset. If the grips curve in at the bottom of the frame then it is a round butt.

The Chiefs Special was introduced in 1950.

Thanks again Radagast!

I believe that the model number was inside the crane, mint checkered grips with uncheckered diamond, round butt, near mint blueing, deep rifleing and shiney bore and the box was so mint and pristine, you would swear it just came out of the wherehouse (only thing missing were the papers)! I paid almost nothing for it! It will go nice with my mint 1962 Colt Detective Special!:)

a) 38 SPL
b) 4"
c) Square
d) 6
e) Front is fixed. Rear? Not sure. Screws on both side of the mount, so I would think so, but I don't have a driver clean enough to not muck the screws, so I haven't checked it.
f) 3K521xx
g) 15-3

Thanks!

Your K-Frame Model 15-3 would have been made I believe in 1972 . The rear sight is adjustable .

(just a quick fill in until the experts come)

Just traded for this yesterday. Interesting SN though:

a. .357 Mag
b. 2 1/2"
c. Round Butt
d. 6 shot
e. adjustable rear (front fixed w/ insert orange)
f. 99K01xx
g. 66-1

Thanks for the input

shooter-55: 1981. This was the last year that pinned barrels & recessed cylinders were available, with both being deleted in 1982.

Model 10-8
38 spl
4"barrel
6 shot
fixed sights
square butt
K frame

Serial No. AFL 44xx

Any help with the DOB of this revolver would be appreciated.

Have a 640-1 J-Frame in need of ID

a) 357
b) 2"
c) round butt
d) 5 shot
e) pinned sight
f) CAH6XXX
g) 640-1

any help would be greatly appreciated, it is a pre-lock if that helps.

I picked up a 60-4 a while back. BNE51xx. Per the catalog, it's a limited run in 1990 with 3" full underlug and adjustable sights. But the BNE prefix isn't even in the catalog. Reason? Also, I'd like to get a new yoke screw but this one has a spring loaded 'plunger' on the tip. Nothing like my other Smiths. Anyone know where I can get one?
