No, not a Model of 1905 4th. change.
Those were last made in 1942.

Yours is a modern Model 10-7 M&P tapered barrel, made in 1979.
The Model 10-7 change was first made in 1977 and moved the cylinder gas ring from the yoke to the cylinder to prevent binding.

The 10-8 change was also done in 1977, and involved the same change as the 10-7, only on the heavy barrel model 10.

Your pearl grips are almost certainly aftermarket replacements.
The gun came with checkered diamond style walnut grips.

Hello! I just purchased a 442 from a local gun shop and the gun shop guy told me that this was one of the older 442s that was not supposed to take +P ammo. Could you confirm that information?

f) SN: BPN13xx. Also it says "057" on the crane itself.
g) "Mod 442" (no dashes or other numbers)

crazyfire: It's not a collectible rare gun, the 10-7 was made from 1977 to 1988, with over a million fixed sight K frame guns made during that period. A large portion would have been the model 10. Its a fine shooter though.

TMann: Your 442 was made between December 1993 & January 1994. The 442 was introduced in 1993.
In 1996 the 442-1 began production with the change to the J magnum frame and was rated for .38 +P.
On the positive side, the original 442 is slightly smaller than the 442-1, which counts when trying to conceal a firearm.

I have a question about a pistol I bought in 1965

All Mod 38's I have seen seem to refer to a bodyguard version with concealed hammer. Mine is outside. What is the correct reference to this model? Do you have any idea of source of a manual (thrown away due to youthful indescretion? Any guess of value?

If you have a Model 38 you have an Airweight Bodyguard.
It is a round butt.

The hammer is visable but shielded by the frame so it can't get snagged, but you can still cock it for SA if you want to. As on all Model 38 & Model 49 Bodyguards.

Your pre-J prefex serial number indicates it was made between 1962 (295,000) and 1969 (786,544).
I would guess about 1964-65 probably.

Having found no pics of a bodyguard Mod38 that looks like min - I don't have a shrouded hammer, I have carfully examined my pistol frame and have decided that Model no is 36, not t38. That's why all the pics I found of chief's specials looked like mine. Does my serial no corresponded with a Chief's Special?

Sorry to be a paid but those number are so small that a 6 can easily look like an 8.

Guns that have been bought and never fired are quite common. If it shows a drag line on the cylinder then the action has been cycled, but it may not have been shot. These are commonly referred to as 'As New In Box".

S&W don't recommend PlusP ammo in any gun made prior to 1957. Yours should be fine. Constant use will show accelerated wear over time, but I doubt you will shoot it enough for it to become a problem.
