There is a revolver at a LGS with an unusual stamp on the right side of the frame. It is tagged as a model 15, but I dont' recall seeing any model numbers on the gun, the bluing is in pretty good condition overall, just some minor wear on the muzzle and top of the front sight. The unusual stamp on the right side of the frame appears to be the Third Reich eagle and swastika national insignia with the number 63 underneath. All of the clerks at the counter claimed to have never seen the stamp before. Is there a way to determine if a gun has been reblued? What would be a fair price for such a revolver be?

a) caliber
.38 S&W Special

b) bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle)
4"

c) grips shape (round or square)
Square

d) number of shots/cylinder bores
6
e) type of sights.
Adjustable, ramp front sight with orange-red insert

f) serial number, and if there is a letter in front of or anywhere near the s/n on the bottom of the grip
K 224108

g) Model number if it is under the crane.
I did not see a model number under the crane, there were some numbers under the crane though

Somebodys idea of a sick joke was applying a Waffenamt to that gun. Although the Nazis were not above using captured American sidearms, or confiscated civilian weapons, that style of ejector rod (and unrelieved barrel) wasnt used until after WW2. The adjustable rear sight is wrong too.
Its most likely a Pre-15, aka K-38 Combat Masterpeice, thus why there is no Model Number on the frame.
I own actual WW2 guns with Waffenamts- to remove them would be whitewashing history- but that is a desecration. If I bought that gun (and I might if the condition and price were right) Id grind that off immediatly.

The SN dates the gun to 1954, well beyond the years of the Waffenampt; can't say why that revolver has that stamp. The stocks are not original, not even S&W but aftermarket, and my guess is a refinish, done after the Waffenampt stamp was placed. No model number because they weren't assigned until 1957. I agree with Nightlord, looks like a Pre M-15

The books list C622700 - C810532 as 1963 - 1965 so you have a 3 year range.
BUT, the SCSW 4th Edition lists the M10-5 as only 1 year, 1962 so it seems there is a bit of a discrepancy in the dash # and the serial #.

I hope this helps a bit.

This going to be a thread for those who are looking for a date of manufacture for their S&W revolvers.

We'd need to know :

a) caliber
b) bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle)
c) grips shape (round or square)
d) number of shots/cylinder bores
e) type of sights.
f) serial number, and if there is a letter in front of or anywhere near the s/n on the bottom of the grip
g) Model number if it is under the crane.
That number, if it is the s/n, should come from the butt of the grip (or under the barrel or face of the cylinder).

A picture or two is worth A LOT of words in this case...

a) caliber- .44 Special
b) bbl length- 5"
c) grips shape- Square
d) number of shots/cylinder bores- 6
e) type of sights- Fixed- square notch rear, half-moon front
f) serial number- 62830
g) Model number if it is under the crane- Two shallow "V" stamps and "3502"

681s are rare, only made for a few years late 80s to early 90s, all in 4", fixed sights, with square butts. They were almost exclusively snapped up by private security and a few LE organizations, and will often have department markings.
The original wood Magna grips, if still present, add about $75-$100 to the value of the gun. If you dont fall in love with it, let me know and I will take it off your hands. :)
Welcome to the forum!

Let me tell you, I get why you'd be eager! I have been looking for one I can afford for a few years and just snatched this one on a great deal. It's possibly my favorite S&W next to the 686 CS1 3". No clue why, but the 4" 681 is just about perfect aesthetically to me.

A 681 was my first handgun. Never would have sold it except my job went away back in '08 and the kids were hungry, it was the last one to go and put food on the table for a few weeks.
I do have a sweet 686 now, but its just not the same, lol.

Two old revolvers, both S&W Safety Hammerless.
First, .32 S&W, 3" barrel, 5 shot S/N 231552, top break.
Second, .38 S&W 3 1/4" barrel, 5 shot, S/N 116260, Top break.
Thank you Roger IMG_1809.JPG
