Target Masterpiece

Just got a new-to-me revolver and the seller said it was a S&W Target Masterpiece, probably from the early 50s. (It looks identical to my K-17 target revolver.) Confimation of that and a DOB would be appreciated.

a. 38 special
b. 6" barrel, no extended underlug
c. square grip
d. 6 shot
e. adjustable rear, partridge style front sights
f. K217412 (taken from rear of cylinder)

Thanks,

Jeff

The Driver: The earlier part of 1898-1907.

BullRunBear: A K-38 Target Masterpiece with that serial dates to 1954. You've got quite a nice revolver. The K-38 Target Masterpiece, also called the Pre-Model 14, would have a 6" barrel, square butt, and adjustable rear sights.

38 Target Masterpiece

Shade00,

Thanks for the DOB info and confirmation. I'll post my impressions in a separate thread but it's nice to know the date.

Regards, Jeff

Thanks Shade00

What is the best way to price or sell it this revolver? It's my wifes and she is looking for a Sig.

Thanks again!

Here are some pics of the 38 Safety

Follow up for Brian

I got my letter back from S&W. I posted here because I could not stand the suspense of waiting. Here's what the letter says:

“… Heavy Frame .22/32 Target Model, caliber .22 Long Rifle. Was shipped from Factory on February 8th, 1938 and delivered to Adolph Blaich Co. San Francisco CA.”

So this was a California Gun went from SF to Fresno and then out for service in California Farm country.

“To keep those Blue (Stellar) Jays off my Almond Trees. I don’t need to Kill them, just wing them and then let the Farm (feral) cats take it from there.” as Grandpa would say.

Ruh roh, getting behind again.

cromlw: Best guess is 94-95 based on SCoSW, but you can't be sure with those 37-2s since S&W just recently built some more of them.

JoeShmoe: 87-88.

bigmtnman: Don't see a lot of Model 12s. I like the K-frame Airweights. Yours was born around 1966-67.

JDMAN65: Not sure on this one. The 686-8 may be the most recent variation, but the BFH serial would've been early '90s. Can't say for sure.

michaelforet: Double-check the serial number. I'm not sure which one is the correct serial, but I don't have anything for a serial with two digits before the J. If the serial is 50xxx, then it's a 1953-54 production, which would not be rated for +P.

WARDO88: 2003?

The Lone Haranguer: 75-76.
