Identity and Date of Manufacture of S&W Revolvers

Help with .38 Spcl Mfg Date!!

Hello! I am relatively new to the forum, but have found it EXTREMELY useful.

The thing is, I have a .38 Special S&W, and used the "Common S&W Identifying Features" thread, but have been unable to identify my weapon.

The serial number is 6952?? and under the barrel, where the extractor is located there is another number, 28566.

Any idea on what model it is? It seems as a 4", but no idea on the rest.

e) sights: fixed front, rear I don't see one, just a cavity or kind of cut out.
f) serial number: 6952?? (I didn't put the final 2 numbers because of legal things here in Costa Rica)
g) I am not sure what the crane is, but this number (28566) is below the barrel, where the extractor is fitted when the cylinder is locked in place.

I have a SMith and Wesson revolver with the following features.


1.) Four inch barrel.

2.) Caliber 44 magnum

3.) Serial number S 1802XX

4.) Another number that appears on the crane and the SIDE of the grip frame, almost at the bottom: G 90219.

I was under the understanding that all 44 magnums after 179000 were identified as model 29s, but that appears nowhere on the handgun. It is nickel plated, although it appears to have been refinished. It has a gold hammer and trigger, and some kind of aftermarket grips. I bought it for a shooter, but I hope someone can tell me it is only worth a shooter price before I have it re nickelled.

Thanks for the information, I was guessing early to mid 60's. This 12-2 I bought from a fellow at work whose wife no longer wanted it in the house. $275 for new in box. Even has the anti-rust paper and cleaning brush with it. It's a 2" roundbutt snubby and amazingly accurate. Even a blind hog finds an acorn every now and then!

Brno ZKK-601: You have a .38 Special Hand Ejector M&P, commonly called a .38 M&P or just M&P. Later models are referred to as the Pre-Model 10, and then the Model 10 when S&W began Model numbering. Yours was likely built in the early 1940s, probably 1941 or 42.

docmagnum357: S&W model numbering began in 1957, and your serial would be in the middle of the 57-58 range. S&W dating of this period is not always 100% reliable because of S&W's frame manufacturing. If it did have a model number stamping, it would be inside the crane on the frame and it would say 'Mod. 29.' If it's not there, then you have a pre-Model 29 manufactured in 1957-58. I can't say if S&W ever made a nickel gun with gold-plated hammer and trigger, but it sounds like an aftermarket job. As such, any 'collector's' value has been destroyed and a further renickel would do little to detract from the value.

bigmtnman: You lucky dog! That's quite a steal. A 2" K-frame is a really cool creature, especially an Airweight.

I will have this gun Re nickeled asap. It looks pretty good, not too pimpy. It will be my Sunday go to meeting gun. I will likely carry it in a Rob Lehy Sourdough with some floral carving, etc. It should be a real nice rig.I love the way it shoots 250 grain Keiths at about 100 to 1100 feet per second. Annd it's accurate, too.

I have a S&W Centennial Stainless 640 rated for +P+ with a serial number of CEN01XX. Can someone tell me the approximate age which I think may be early 1990 and how many of these +P+ Centennials were made? Thanks.

I inherited this .38 from my father. It was my grandfather's service weapon when he was a police officer. He was a cop in the 40s-60s. Any info would be great.

It's a 38 with a 5 inch barrel (from cylinder). The number on the butt is 75 with no letter. I have included photos.

The grips are some fake pearl handles that my father put on. My grandfather had REAL pearl handles on it, which I have and plan to put back on the weapon after I have in reblued.

Nighthawk98TJ B16284 this is probably a factory mark and not the serial number, look at the butt it should be there.

66912 828xxx this should have a letter prefix, if it is a V it would be late war, but it might be around 1906 to 1909
CDE3xxx would be around Mar 1999

KINGMAX 686-1 were made around 1987

salvo 3966xx sorry but it would be anywhere between 1915 and 1942, near the middle but one never knows with S&W.

wnycollector 506618 would be somewhere between 1915 and 42 also

e) type of sights.
f) serial number, and if there is a letter in front of or anywhere near the s/n on the bottom of the grip
g) Model number if it is under the crane.
That number, if it is the s/n, should come from the butt of the grip (or under the barrel or face of the cylinder).

Ok, I've got two I'd like to know about.

Both have hammer mounted firing pins, pinned barrels, but neither has recessed chambers. The 14 is a beautiful deep polished blue, the 10-6 has a LOT of holster wear.
