43721 = 1940 - 1945 - If it is a lend-lease, it should say United States Property, or U.S. Property on top strap.

Interesting....driver higgs...I have a

#948153
.38 special
6 shot
k frame square
4" barrel

This gun is within 5 thousand of yours but is not marked for any government. Anyone got a date on mine? Thanks!

bill larry:
You have a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 4th Change, manufactured between 1940 and 1942. Yours was probably made for the civilian market after the US Government began supplying Britain and before the declaration of war by the USA and subsequent take over of all weapons production by the US govt.

MCPO:
Between July 1985 and November 1985. There is a recall out on your gun, there should be an M stamped after the model number if it has been modified under the terms of the recall. Basically some 586 & 686 guns could lock up when the primer flowed back into the firing pin hole. The modification involved a new firing pin and firing pin bushing.

VirginiaHam:
May 1989. You have one of the first full lugged Model 17s produced as the standard barrel Model 17 was discontinued that year.

Thanks Radagast!
I do know about the recall & mine has not been modified.
S&W is supposedly sending me a mailing label.

I am curious when what I believe to be an old “triple lock” might have been produced.
a) .44 S&W Special CTG
b) 6.5” barrel
c) Squared grips
d) 6 shorts
e) Fixed sights
f) On the butt is the number 115XX (same number is also near the front of the ejector shroud)

The revolver also has the following patents listed on top of the barrel.
Mar 27 94, May21, 95 Aug 4 96, Dec 22 96, Oct 9 01, Dec 3 01, Feb 6 06.

The old gal’s finish is pretty rough but she still shoots like a champ, I took her out and put her through the paces this past weekend.

Palmetto:
You have a .44 Hand Ejector 1st Model a.k.a New Century, Triple Lock or .44 Military Model of 1908. Serial range was 1 to 15375 manufactured 1907 to 1915. 13753 were manufactured in .44 S&W Special. Blued or Nickel. Fixed or adjustable sights. 6 shot cylinder on the square butt N frame with checkered diamond walnut grips with a S&W medallion.
The third lock is found in the yoke cut of the frame. There is also a spring loaded plunger in the yoke to hold the cylinder open. 6.5 inches was the common standard barrel length. In good condition the Standard Catalog of S&W gives a value of $750, in very good $1250 and in excellent condition $2000.

mac1956: Your model 60 was made between 1965 & 1969. It will probably have a satin stainless finish with a flash chromed trigger and hammer. If it has the original grips and there is an uncheckered diamond around the grip screws then it was made in 1968 or earlier.

Gun is unfired in box, grips dont have a diamond around the screw.Stainless steel Logo sticker on box.Date on the parts list part of the manual sheet say 3/15/67.
Any idea of the value ?

Bought my first handgun today. Here's the specs:

B. 4" barrel
C. Square Grips
D. Fixed and half moon shaped
E. 490339 on butt, B 490339 on bottom of barrel
G. No model number listed

Any info. you guys can come up with will be greatly appreciated.

harley 1986:
Your 12-2 was manufactured in 1972 or 1973. If it is an Airweight it is a model 12-2, not a 10-2. In excellent condition the Standard Catalog of S&W gave a value of $375 in 2006.

Carbon_15:
1978 to 1980, 1978 sounds right as it is low in the 500xxx serial range used during those years.

Rooster1:
1980. The 57-1 through to 57-4 are all square butt, I'm not sure about the reintroduced 57-5 or 57 Classic. Nice pics.

jdellerbee:
You have a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 4th Change, the precursor to the modern Model 10. Your specimen was manufactured sometime between 1917 and 1927. Heat treating of cylinders was introduced at serial number 316648, so it is safe to shoot with modern .38 special loads. S&W still discourage the use of Plus P ammunition in guns made before 1957 however. These early guns lack the hammer block safety introduced in 1944, so it is best to keep the hammer on an empty chamber. Potentially dropping it on the hammer with a loaded chamber could cause it to fire.

Thanks Radagast.... You are right the model is 12-2 .... my fat fingers on a keyboard!!! Wont blame it on old eyes---- thanks again!!

I just picked up a J Frame at a gun show this weekend. It is my first Smith & Wesson and I think I have fallen in love with it, parting with it as a birthday gift for my mother might prove harder then I originally thought.

I would really appreciate an idea of when the gun was made before I give it to her:

A) .38 Special
B) Don't have a measuring tape, hope the picture will do?
C) Round grip
D) 5 shots
E) Fixed Sights
F) J3156XX
G) MOD.36

Thanks!

ShakyJake:
AHYxxxx dates your 67-1 to between July & November 1985.

NHS:
Your 617-1 dates to between August & October 1997 per the Standard Catalog of S&W date lists.

SgtLas:
I am assuming your serial number is K31830x, not 31830xx. If so it dates to 1958 and is a Model 19 Combat Magnum. The Model 19-1 replaced it in 1959.

headshok:
Your 65-4 dates to between March & October 1993.

ChlorineTrifluoride:
Your Model 36 Chiefs Special was made in 1975 or 1976. Barrel length is two inches, the grips are aftermarket Pachmayer grips.
