Identity and Date of Manufacture of S&W Revolvers

Thank you very much. It happens to not fall into the Coast Guard purchase. But that was a very interesting note.

Also very thankful for the safety info. I examined the action earlier today and wondered how safe it might be given it's unknown design date...again thank you.

Do you have a round dollar figure? I guess I may want to insure the thing. I appreciate your interest in assisting us less schooled individuals.

Several million Military & Police revolvers were made, and it is still in production today as the Model 10. As such the collectors value is not great. The Standard Catalog of S&W gave the following values in 2006: As New In Box $1200. Excellent+ $450. Excellent $335. Very Good $250. Good $200. Fair $135. Poor $75.
 
686 & an unknown...

The 686 is a no-dash, stamped AHD5509

The unknown is a very old .22 6-shot, adj. rear sight, pinned barrel, and whatever you call the extra indentations around the heads of the cartridges in the cylinder. Diamond on grips. Pretty sure it is an alloy frame. has what appears the be 6442 on based of grip and 7759 on inside of frame. Thanks.cwd

AHD55xx dates your 686 to between January & July 1985. All no dash 686s are affected by a recall. Some when fired with magnum loads would have the primer flow back around the firing pin, locking the cylinder. A new firing pin and bushing are installed under the terms of the recall. All modified guns are stamped with the letter M beside the model number. If you want to send your gun in S&W will pay shipping.

Without pics I can't guarantee the following is correct, but your second gun sounds like a Model of 1953 .22/32 Kit Gun Airweight; after 1957 known as the model 43 and manufactured between 1953 & 1957. Built on the J frame six shot, .22lr, adjustable sights, 2 or 3.5 inch barrel. Checkered diamond grips with a S&W medallion and a small S&W medallion on the left side of the frame. 6442 will be the serial number. 7759 will be an assembly number to track parts in the factory. The serial number is found on the butt, cylinder face, yoke, right grip panel and barrel flat. 2 inch barrels are rare and valuable to a collector.

Thanks. The 686, I'm calling S&W for the modification. The .22 has the longer barrel-in fact, thought it was a 4" and not a 3.5"-I'll check when I get home tonight.cwd

The 65-2 was manufactured from 1972 to 1982.
The serial number should look have a D in it, in this format xDxxxxx.

Is appears that you have quoted an assembly number that is stamped on parts in the factory to track them during the assembly process. The serial number will be found on the bottom of the grip frame. If your gun has aftermarket grips you may have to remove them to see the serial number.

Looks like 1987 to me.

But I'm new at this, so please, someone else double check me! ;)

By the way, S&W recalled the 686 no dash and -1 models years ago - can't remember the reason now. If there is an "M" overstamped on or near the model number, then the recall has been taken care of by S&W already on your gun. If you don't see an "M", or if you have any questions, you can give S&W a call.

Between July 1987 (AWWxxxx) & December 1987 (AYWxxxx).
The recall is due to some 686 no dash and 686-1 guns having a problem with the primer flowing back into the firing pin bushing and locking the cylinder. The recall upgrades the gun to 686-2 standard with a new firing pin and bushing. S&W will pay freight if you want to have this done.

1969. Same year as my 15-3 4", which I paid $309 for in May/June of '09.

The 15 was not stainless, so your's is probably a nickel finish. Not sure of the value on that one. How would you describe the condition?

thanks for the feedback - nickel finish is correct - the revolver is in very good condition, original rounded wooden grips - no visible wear.
