Your Model 67-1 .38 Combat Masterpiece Stainless was manufactured in early 1988. Serial numbers in the AYExxxx range shipped in January, in the BBFxxxx range in July.

Your Model 60 Chiefs Special Stainless dates to the period between 1962 & 1969.
Serial range for those years was 295000 to 786544.
If the cylinder release is flat then 1962-1966.
If the cylinder release is concave and the original grips have an uncheckered diamond around the grip screws then 1966-1968.
If cylinder release is concave and the original grips have the checkering cover all the timber around the grip screws then 1968-1969.

Your great-grandfather-in-law's (is there such a word?) gun is a .38 Military & Police 2nd Model (Model of 1902) manufactured between 1902 & 1903 in the serial range 20976 to 33803.
This gun does not have a heat treated cylinder (introduced as serial number 316648) so I recommend that you do not use jacketed, semi jacketed, PlusP or +P+ ammunition in this old gun. Stick to standard velocity lead loads.
It also predates the postive hammer block safety introduced during World War II, if dropped it could fire. I suggest you leave the chamber under the hammer empty.

Radagast, Thanks for the excellent information. My revolver falls into the 1968-69 range. It has the later cylinder release, and the original grips which do not have the diamond. Thanks again!

Your Model 64 .38 Military & Police Stainless was manufactured in 1972 or 1973. Serial range for that period was D420001 to D510000, so 1973 seems almost certain.

Without that info I can't help you as S&W made millions of .38s in multiple models. All I can say for certain at this point is it was made between 1860 & yesterday!

Your Baby Chiefs Special was manufactured between 1950 & 1952. The Standard Catalog of S&W notes that Chiefs Special was introduced in 1950 and the square butt variant was introduced in 1952 at serial number 21342. The change over from the small trigger guard/I frame sized grip to the larger trigger guard / J frame sized grip began in 1951, so its quite likely that your gun is from 1950/51.

Your Model 586-1 Distinguished Combat Magnum was manufactured 1987. There is a recall out for all 586 & 586-1 guns. With some magnum ammo the primer could flow back around the firing pin into the firing pin bushing, locking up the cylinder.
Under the terms of the recall S&W will pay shipping both ways and install a new firing pin and bushing.
If your gun has already been modified there should be an M stamped after the Model number under the cylinder yoke.
If you want to have your gun modified, give S&W a call, they will send you a shipping label.

FWIW its a rare problem, I've only read of one case in 10 years on the internet gun boards.

If the serial number is S99968 (6 digits long,) not S99968x (seven digits long) then you have a .38/44 Outdoorsman Model of 1950 manufactured between 1953 & 1954. In 1957 this model was designated the Model 23.

In 2006 the Standard Catalog of S&W gave a value of $650 in excellent condition.
Value is heavily dependent on condition, so you should start a new thread and post pics if you want an idea of its current value.

pictures of the .38/44

Thank you for your analysis and instructions on the pictures. This is the gun. I hope the pictures show. It is in good condition a minor scratch and a little wear on the cylinder throught the bluing on the notches.

It was an heirloom I bought from a friend whose wife wanted him to get rid of it. Now he wants to buy it back. Good thing I kept it.

Any comments on value would be helpful.
